Golden Wolves Blow Past Lions, 89-54 in Season Opener

Reading, Pa (November 8, 2023) - Alvernia University (1-0) outscored Penn State Brandywine 29-8 in the second quarter en route to an 89-54 victory over the Lions in a non-conference women's basketball matchup Wednesday evening at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

The Golden Wolves held a three point, 21-18 lead after the first quarter but exploded for 29 in the second, 19 in the third and 20 in the fourth en route to the season opening victory. 

Alvernia jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game thanks to a Kayla Williams three pointer and a jumper from Taliyah Malone

Brandywine's Anaiyah Allen responded with a three to cut it to 6-3 but Malone responded with a three ball of her own to push the lead back to six, 9-3. 

The Lions came down on the next possession and tallied a three to make it 9-6 but a Tamia Wessels layup put the Golden Wolves up 11-6. 

Brandywine's Sierra Diawara knocked down a two point jumper and Allen knocked down her second three to tie the game at 11 with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter. 

Madison Miskar then hit a baseline jumper for the Golden Wolves but another three by Allen saw the Lions take their only lead of the night, 14-13 with 2:41 to go in the quarter. 

Alvernia ended the quarter on an 8-4 scoring run that saw Jordan Karmonick and Jordyn Ingelido knock down three pointers and Ingelido hit a jumper with four seconds left on the clock to make it 21-18 Golden Wolves after ten minutes of basketball. 

The Golden Wolves came out of the quarter firing with layups from Ingelido and Kylie Bradford and an elbow jumper from Megan Ruth pushed the Alvernia lead to 27-18. 

The Lions halted the Alvernia run with two free throws to make it 27-20 but the Golden Wolves bounced back by ripping off a 12-2 scoring run in the next 2:44 to make it a 17 point, 39-22 game. Bradford tallied eight during the run and Williams and Wessels both recorded buckets for the Golden Wolves. 

Brandywine stopped the Alvernia run with a Athena Brombacher layup but the Golden Wolves continued to score in bunches, posting a 9-2 run to end the quarter and take a controlling 24 point, 50-26 lead into the half. 

Alvernia and Brandywine traded buckets out of the half with the Golden Wolves then pulling away even more after a 12-7 run in the first four minutes of the third quarter. Karmonick tallied four points, Ruth also added four and both Malone and Wessels added two as the Golden Wolves continued to add to their lead, 62-33. 
The Lions responded with a 9-4 scoring run of their own to make it a 66-42 game but an and one conversion by Alvernia's Lilliana Knudsen put the Golden Wolves up 27 going into the final quarter. 

Alvernia's Morgan Janeski knocked down a three to open up the fourth quarter, the Lions responded with two free throws but a Williams layup pushed the lead to 30, 74-44 with eight to go. Janeski then tallied back to back buckets for the Golden Wolves to make it a 78-44 game. 

The Golden Wolves and the Lions would trade points back and forth for the next three minutes with Alvernia maintaining a commanding 83-49 advantage with just over four minutes to go in the contest. 

Ruth then tallied a layup but the Lions bounced back with a layup of their own and a three ball to make it 85-54. The Golden Wolves then recorded the final two buckets of the game with Ky Brantley knocking down her first collegiate bucket and Knudsen tallied a layup with under 30 seconds to go to secure the 89-54 victory in the season opener. 

Williams led the way for the Golden Wolves with 12 points,12 rebounds and added six assists and two blocks. Ruth tallied 12 points as well and added five rebounds in 18 minutes of work while Wessels recorded 11 points and Bradford and Janeski both added ten. Karmonick posted a team high three steals along with seven points, seven rebounds and five assists. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they take on Catholic at 5:30 PM in the first game of the Bridgewater Tip-Off Tournament in Bridgewater, Virginia.
