Golden Wolves Open Daytona Beach Shootout with 77-54 Win Over Thomas

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Dec. 20, 2023) - Alvernia University Women's Basketball opened up its trip to the Daytona Beach Shootout with a 77-54 win over Thomas College on Wednesday night in non-conference women's basketball action at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center.

Alvernia used a hot hand early and rode a 41 point first half to the 77-54 win. With the win Alvernia improved to 7-2 on the season, and Thomas College dropped 4-8 overall.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia got on the board with an early 3-pointer from Taliyah Malone on the first possession for the Golden Wolves. Malone then put up her second 3-pointer of the game 40 seconds later for the early 6-2 lead.
  • Thomas tied it up at 6-6 after just over two minutes of action, but Alvernia broke it back open with a 3-pointer from Tamia Wessels and a layup from Kayla Williams off a Thomas turnover.
  • As the opening quarter moved through the midway point, Thomas got within one twice. But, another Williams layup and a 3-pointer from Jordyn Ingelido made it a six point game, 19-13, with 3:07 to play in the quarter. The Terriers would score the final four points of the quarter, but Alvernia took a 21-17 lead into the second frame.
  • Alvernia scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 12 point lead on the Terriers, 29-17, through the first two minutes of the quarter. Madison Miskar opened the run with a layup and Williams kept it rolling with a 3-pointer. Wessels added a point on a free throw and Malone capped things off with a jumper.
  • Slowing scored for the next four minutes as the Terriers cut the game back down to eight, 33-25, with 4:09 to play in the half. But, a 3-pointer by Wessels sparked life back into the Golden Wolves as Alvernia ended the quarter just as they started it - on an 8-0 run. Alvernia took the 41-25 lead into the break.
  • Alvernia forced 13 turnovers in the first half and scored seven points off of turnovers. Alvernia also had 21 of its 41 first half points come from beyond the arc.
  • The Golden Wolves and Terriers traded field goals to open the second half and Alvernia extended its lead back to 15, 48-33, on a Williams jumper with 6:15 on the clock.
  • Jordan Karmonick knocked down a corner 3-pointer at the midpoint of the quarter to give Alvernia the 16 point advantage, 51-35. Alvernia did not let the Terriers within 12 the rest of the frame as the Golden Wolves took the 57-41 lead into the final ten minutes.
  • After a trading of points to open the fourth, the Terriers scored a quick five points to cut the game down to ten, 59-49, with 7:49 to play. Alvernia called a timeout to regroup and hit the inbound to Jennah DeGout for an open layup and used a 3-pointer from Jordyn Ingelido to take its lead back up to 15, 64-49.
  • Alvernia kept it rolling from there, pushing the lead to 18 with another inside layup from DeGout.
  • A putback layup from Miskar in the final minute gave Alvernia a 21-point lead, 75-54, and Aaliyah Ferrer jumper capped the night off for the 77-54 final.
