Rochester N.Y. (February 11, 2023) - #14 Nazareth University (18-5-0, 17-1-0) scored three goals in the first period to down Alvernia University (10-10-3, 9-8-1) 4-1, in UCHC women's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon at Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers got on the board first when Corsica Skibinski assisted Ali Fujiyoshi four minutes into the game to give Nazareth an early 1-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves responded just over a minute later when Gillian Evans netted an unassisted goal to knot the game at one with 12 minutes left in the period.
Nazareth made it 2-1 in the ninth minute when Ally Watrous found the back of the net thanks to assists from Ali Fujiyoshi and Carle Delaney.
The Golden Flyers tallied their third goal of the period when Morgan Leuenberger scored to make it 3-1 Nazareth with eight minutes left in the period.
Nazareth added one more insurance goal in the seventh minute of the second period when Watrous tallied her second goal of the contest and made it a 4-1 game.
The Golden Flyers fired 18 shots in the final 12 minutes of the period but Julia Beaven saved eight of them as the game went into the final intermission with Nazareth holding a 4-1 lead.
A scoreless third period saw Beaven tally 21 saves on 28 shots as Nazareth secured the 4-1 victory and the series sweep.
Beaven tallied 42 saves in net for Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves were led by Evan with the goal and two shots on goal, Amber Steinhilpert tallied two shots on goal and Kathryn Palmer led Alvernia with 12 faceoff wins.
Alvernia is back in action Friday when they host King's College for Senior Day at 3:00 PM.
