Golden Wolves Split Series With Cougars

Reading, Pa (March 22, 2023) - Alvernia University (7-3) split a weekday series with Misericordia University (8-6) in a non- conference softball matchup Wednesday afternoon in Angelica Park.

The Golden Wolves took game one thanks to a walk-off single by Emily Sano to edge the Cougars 1-0 but Misericordia came back firing and won the second game 9-4 to even the series.

Misericordia held Alvernia in check through the first four and a half innings as the Cougars did not allow a hit until Jaclyn Barbera led off the bottom half of the fifth inning with a single to left center field to tally Alvernia's first hit of the ballgame. Payton LaScala would come in to pinch run for Barbera, she then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball but back to back strikeouts for the Golden Wolves halted the momentum.

Both teams would keep eachother at bay until Tara Tumasz tallied a pinch hit single down the right field line to lead off the bottom of the seventh, Maggie Loomis then came in to pinch run for Tumasz. Paige Paciolla laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Loomis into scoring position at second base.

Barbera and Julie Burkhardt forced back to back walks to load the bases with one out in the bottom half of the seventh, bringing Sano to the plate as a pinch hitter. Sano then singled to the right side to score Loomis and walk off game one.

Loomis got the win for Alvernia, pitching a complete game, allowed only five hits and allowed zero runs.

Loomis scored the only run for Alvernia, Tumasz and Barbera recorded hits and Sano tallied a hit and the only RBI.

The Cougars bounced back in game two, tallying four runs in the first two innings when Nicole Elliot recorded an RBI double in the first and Alexa McHugh ripped a two RBI double as the Cougars went up 4-0.

Alvernia pulled one back in the bottom half of the second when Devan Hudson ripped a line drive over the center fielder's head and drove Sano in to cut the lead to 4-1.

Misericordia got one back in the third when Gianna Russo homered to right field to extend the Cougar lead back to four, 5-1.

Sano tallied an RBI single down the left field line to score Barbera and make it 5-2 Misericordia after three innings.

The Cougars scored four runs between the fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 9-2 with a sacrifice fly, and RBI single and a two RBI double by Kaitlin Redling to put Misericordia up seven runs.

The Golden Wolves grabbed two runs back in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn't enough as Misericordia secured the 9-4 victory over Alvernia and secured the series split.

Ashlyn Hillanbrand started for the Golden Wolves in game two, Natalie Berwick came on and threw 4.1 innings in relief and Emma Kropkowski came on for one inning in relief.

Hudson and Sano led Alvernia in game two with two hits and an RBI a piece, Tumasz and Alexis Fitzgerald both tallied an RBI and Brooke Weister went 2-3 with a run scored.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lebanon Valley to take on the Dutchmen for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. Game times are set for 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
