Elizabethtown Edges Alvernia, 4-2

Elizabethtown, Pa. (April 18, 2023) – In a battle of 21-win teams, Elizabethtown College (22-7) prevailed over Alvernia University (21-12) as the Blue Jays defeated the Golden Wolves 4-2 in non-conference baseball action at Elizabethtown.

Alvernia struck first as Mike Ramundo drove in Evan Thomas on a double to left field in the top of the first, but Elizabethtown evened it right up at 1-1 following a triple and a RBI groundout in its half of the first.

After a scoreless second inning, Elizabethtown added on to its lead in the bottom of the third. The Blue Jays led off the inning with a single, and drove in a run on a triple. They then made it a 3-1 run on the next at bat with a sacrifice hit.

Both teams stranded three runners in the fourth and had runners in scoring position in the fifth, but could not capitalize.

Alvernia got one back in the top of the sixth as Jason Lind drove in Jason Kelly with a double to the right gap. But, Alvernia's next batter was retired to end the inning with Alvernia trailing by one, 3-2.

The Blue Jays added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to go back up by two with two innings to play.

Alvernia stranded a runner on second in the top of the eighth and was retired in order in the top of the ninth as the Blue Jays picked up the 4-2 win.

Ramundo went 2-for-4 to lead Alvernia's offense. His RBI double in the top of the first marked his 100th career hit.

Alvernia is back in action on Friday hosting Stevenson to open up its MAC Commonwealth series with the Mustangs.
