Golden Wolves Split Conference Doubleheader with Mustangs

Owings Mills, Md. (April 2, 2023) - Alvernia University (8-8, 1-5) picked up its first MAC Commonwealth win of the season as the Golden Wolves split a Sunday doubleheader with Stevenson University (13-8, 5-1) in conference softball action at Stevenson.

Alvernia was held to just two hits in game one as the Mustangs took a 4-0 lead. Alvernia rebounded in game two, putting up 14 hits en route to an 8-4 win to end a six game skid for the Golden Wolves.

In game one of the afternoon, the Mustangs broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the sixth as the Mustangs plated four runs on five hits to take the 4-0 lead going into the seventh inning.

Alvernia had a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh as Brooke Weister doubled with two outs. But, Alvernia could not get anything going as Stevenson took the 4-0 game one win.

Alvernia was held to two just hits in the first game of the day. Maggie Loomis got the start for Alvernia and Emma Kropkowski struckout two in relief.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia's offense started out quicker than they did in game one. Fitzgerald led off the game with a single and stole second. She then moved to third on a Loomis double, and came around to score on an error during Jaclyn Barbera's at-bat to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.

Alvernia kept things going in the top of the second as Fitzgerald hit a two-run single up the middle to score Kalli Bunnell and Devan Hudson. Barbera then singled to left center to score Fitzgerald and give Alvernia the 4-0 lead.

The Mustangs got three back in their half of the second, scoring three runs on four hits to get right back within one run. Stevenson then evened it up at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single following an Alvernia error.

Alvernia retook the lead with a three-run top of the fifth. Hudson drove in Meryn Bellacima on a single to right field, and Kropkowski hit a sacrifice fly to score Paige Paciolla. Fitzgerald capped off the inning with a single to right field to score Hudson and give Alvernia the 7-4 lead.

The Golden Wolves added one more in the top of the seventh as Loomis singled to right field to drive in Kropkowski and give Alvernia the 8-4 lead with the bottom of the seventh to play.

The Mustangs had runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, but Kropkowski and the Alvernia defense retired the final two batters to secure the 8-4 win over the Mustangs.

Kropkowski grabbed the win in relief, allowing just three hits in just over three innings of work. Hudson and Fitzgerald finished with three hits each, and Fitzgerald had three RBIs.

Alvernia is back in action on Thursday hosting Albright.
