Alvernia Comeback Comes Up Short to Eastern

St. David's, Pa. (April 26, 2023) - A late seventh inning rally for Alvernia University (18-11, 6-7) came up short as Eastern University (20-10, 8-5) took a 6-4 win over the Golden Wolves on Wednesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth softball action.

The afternoon was scheduled to be a doubleheader, but bad weather coming through the area forced game two to be pushed to Thursday at 4:30 PM.

Alvernia nearly posted a comeback in game one of the doubleheader as Alvernia put up three runs to get within two, 6-4, with no outs. But, Alvernia hit into a double play and its final batter struck out looking to end the threat.

The Golden Wolves took an early 1-0 on the Eagles in the top of the first as Allison Kirschner singled through the left side to score Alexia Fitzgerald.

But, Alvernia's lead did not last long as the Eagles scored four runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead. The Eagles then added on one more in the bottom of the second on a single up the middle to make it a 5-1 game. Eastern then added another run on a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-1 game.

Alvernia was held to just one hit through the sixth inning before coming alive in the top of the seventh. Kirschner led off the inning with a single up the middle and Brooke Weister joined her on base with a single of her own. An error by the Eagles on the at bat of Paige Paciolla loaded the bases, and Devan Hudson cleared them with a bases loaded double to get Alvernia within two, 6-4. But, the Eagles ended the threat before Alvernia could add anymore on to take the game one win.

Kirschner, Fitzgerald, and Weister each finished with two hits to lead Alvernia in game one.

Alvernia is back at Eastern tomorrow to finish out the series with a single game at 4:30 PM.
