Strong Second Half Powers Stevenson Past Alvernia, 16-6

Owings Mills, Md. (April 29, 2023) - Stevenson University (7-10, 5-3) used a six-goal third quarter to defeat Alvernia University (8-8, 2-6) 16-6 on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Stevenson. 

Alvernia trailed by just three at the half, but the Mustangs broke it open with a five goal run in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Alvernia was held to just three goals total in the second half as Stevenson came away with the 16-6 win in the regular season finale. 

After a scoreless opening six minutes, Stevenson opened the scoring with a goal with 8:23 to play in the first quarter. But, the Mustang's 1-0 lead did not last long as Alvernia evened it up at 1-1 on the ensuing draw as Meagan Moky put one in the back of the net for the Golden Wolves.

The score nearly remained at 1-1 going into the second quarter, but Stevenson scored with 15 seconds to play in the quarter to take a 2-1 lead into the second frame.

The Mustangs opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals in the opening four minutes of the quarter to push its lead to three, 4-1.

Alvernia cut Stevenson's lead back in half with ten minutes to play as Haleigh Lackner found Sherrin Smith to make it a two goal game, 4-2, with 10:06 on the clock. But, Stevenson rattled off two quick goals to extend its lead back to four, 6-2, with 8:22 to play. 

Alvernia got one back on Smith's second of the quarter to make it a 6-3 game six minutes to play in the half. That goal marked the final of the half as Stevenson took the three goal lead into the third quarter. 

The Mustangs then opened the third quarter with five goals in seven minutes to break the game open and take an eight goal lead, 11-3, with 6:56 to play in the third quarter. 

A free position goal from Moky ended the Stevenson run with five minutes to play in the quarter, but the Mustangs scored the final of the quarter to take a 12-4 lead into the final 15 minutes. 

Moky opened the fourth quarter for Alvernia with a goal to bring the Golden Wolves within seven, 12-5. But, the Mustangs went on another quick 4-0 run to make it an 11 goal game, 16-5, with 7:14 to play.

Alvernia scored the final goal of the game as Mackenzie McKinney found the back of the net off the feed of Lackner to make it a 16-6 final.

Moky finished with a team high three goals and Smith added two. Lackner had two assists and seven draw controls.

Kasey Fox got the start in net for Alvernia, making 11 saves. Kirsten Lake came in in the second half and made three saves.

Today's loss marks the end of Alvernia's 2023 season. With a .500 win percentage, Alvernia's 8-8 record marks its best finish by win percentage since 2014.
