Alvernia Splits with Widener to Close out 2023

Reading, Pa. (May 1, 2023) - Alvernia University (19-13, 7-9) split its regular season finale with Widener University (16-23, 4-11) to close out the 2023 season on Monday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth action at Alvernia.

Alvernia fell 2-1 in game one before taking game two 2-0 to close out the season.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Devan Hudson drove in Allison Kirschner on a fielder's choice.

Alvernia's lead lasted until the sixth inning when Widener took a 2-1 lead on a two-run double. Alvernia had the game-tying run on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to even it up as Widener took game one, 2-1.

Maggie Loomis went the distance for Alvernia in the circle in the loss, striking out six.

In game two to close out the regular season, Alvernia got on the board as Emma Kropkowski singled down the right field line in the bottom of the fourth to drive in Hudson and give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.

Alvernia then added an insurance run in the sixth as Emily Sano hit her first career home run to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead.

Alvernia held Widener hitless in the seventh to preserve the shutout and end the season with the 2-0 win.

Kropkowski picked up the win in the circle in her final career game with five strikeouts.

Alvernia concludes the 2023 season 19-13 overall and 7-9 in MAC Commonwealth play.
