Offense Struggles as Ursinus Takes 38-6 Win Over Alvernia in 2023 Opener

Collegeville, Pa. (Sept 2, 2023) - Alvernia University (0-1) prevented the shutout with a late touchdown as the Golden Wolves fell to Ursinus College (1-0) 38-6 on Friday night in the 2023 season opener at Ursinus.

The Golden Wolves and Bears were even in total offensive yards through the first quarter, but Ursinus pulled away in the second frame and never looked back. The Golden Wolves struggled to get anything going after their first drive. Alvernia was held to just 69 yards through the first half to Ursinus' 306 yards of total offense through the first two quarters. The Bears went on to finish the game with 411 yards of offense to Alvernia's 198 yards

Ursinus won the opening coin toss and deferred until the second half. The Bears then kicked off to an awaiting Joseph Perkins, who brought it out to the Alvernia 15. Two rushes for four and seven yards by Ozmere Jones appeared to give Alvernia a first down, but a holding call on Alvernia backed the Golden Wolves up to their own ten yard line. Alvernia was then looking at a 3rd and 14, but a toe-tap grab by Dachan Thompson from Colin Payne along the Alvernia sideline kept the drive alive. Jones then rushed up the middle for a 22 yard gain to move the ball onto the edge of the red zone. BUt, Alvernia's drive stalled out from there as the Bears forced three straight incompletions for a turnover on downs.

Ursinus took over at their own 25 yard line and took ten plays to drive 75 yards and take the 7-0 lead.

Alvernia went three and out on its next drive, but also forced a punt on the ensuing Bears drive  to keep it a 7-0 game entering the second quarter.

Alvernia had the ball entering the second frame, but the drive again stalled out. Hunter Bojanic then punted a nearly 60 yard punt down field and a holding call against the Bears on the punt backed them up to their own four yard line. The Bears worked their way to the Alvernia 28 yard line, but a pass breakup by Jamel Fleming on 4th and 3 forced a turnover on downs for Ursinus.

After a quick three and out for Alvernia, the Bears took over at their own 35 yard line and capped off a quick drive with a 34 yard pass up the middle for a touchdown as Ursinus took the 14-0 lead.

After another short drive by Alvernia's offense, Ursinus had a 34 yard punt return that took the Bears to Alvernia's five yard line. A dead ball foul on Alvernia then put the Bears at a 1st and goal from the two yard line, and Ursinus needed just two short runs to find the back of the end zone and take the 21-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves forced a fumble on Ursinus' next drive, but could not do anything with the short field as the Golden Wolves were again forced to punt the ball away. Ursinus picked up a field goal to tack on three to its lead and make it a 24-0 game with just under a minute to play in the first half.

Alvernia's next drive lasted just 17 seconds, giving Ursinus 12 seconds to either run out the clock or attempt to score one more time before the half. Ursinus opted to drive for the end zone, but first year Khyzir Young intercepted a pass from Ursinus' Jalen Bradford to close out the half and make it a 24-0 game going into the break.

Ursinus received the opening kickoff of the second half and took the opening drive down the field for its fourth touchdown of the game to make it a 31-0 contest with ten minutes to play in the third quarter.

After trading the next two drives, Alvernia picked up its first first down in over a quarter on a 13 yard connection from Payne to Thompson. But, another offensive penalty on Alvernia on the next play stalled out the drive and Payne was intercepted on 3rd and 20 at midfield to give the ball back to the Bears with 4:04 left in the third.

The Bears kept things rolling and needed six plays to reach the back of the end zone and make it a 38-0 game with a minute to play in the third quarter.

Facing a 3rd and 10 as time was expiring in the quarter, Payne connected with Perkins for a 23 yard pass to move the ball to Alvernia's 47 yard line as the game entered the fourth quarter. But, Alvernia again stalled out and was forced to punt the ball away.

Alvernia and the Bears traded drives to bring the game into the final five minutes. With the Bears facing a 2nd and 14 on their own 17, Taron Gale came up with Alvernia's second interception of the game to give Alvernia the ball back with a short field and three minutes to play. The Golden Wolves worked their way down to the Ursinus 12 yard line and faced a 2nd and short three yards. But, the next three plays resulted in a total of a two yard gain as Alvernia turned the ball over on downs.

The Bears had to punt after its ensuing drive, and Alvernia's next drive resulted in a punt of its own as well.  But, the Bear's muffed Bojanics punt and it was recovered by Alvernia's Kashantis Anderson to give Alvernia its shortest field of the night at Ursinus' 19 yard line with under a minute to play.

Wade Young lined up under center for Alvernia in the final minute and on 3rd and 6 Young would fellow first year Treson Whitlow for a 15 yard fade pass to the Alvernia side pylon for a Golden Wolves touchdown. The extra point hold was fumbled, but the six points on the Young reception ended the Ursinus shutout bid.

The Bears knelt out the clock following the ensuing kickoff as they came away with the 38-6 win over the Golden Wolves.

Payne went 17-for-34 and 165 yards for Alvernia, but was sacked six times and hurried several more times. Jones finished with 29 rushing yards, and Thompson had four receptions for 52 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Taron Gale had eight tackles, and Elijiah Carr and McCabe Piavis each finished with seven tackles. Gale also had an interception, and Young finished with four tackles and an interception. Bojanic punted the ball ten times, pinning Ursinus inside its own 20 yard line four times and averaging 38.6 yards a punt.

Ursinus' Jalen Bradford went 14-for-23 for 224 yards passing and Cody House ran for 88 yards. Sean Spinsosa and Michael McCuen finished with seven tackles each.

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday as the Golden Wolves head to historic Penn Field to take on first year Eastern University in the MAC 2023 opener.
