York, Pa (September 26, 2023) - Alvernia University (6-4, 1-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but York College (7-6, 1-1) won the final three sets to take the match, 3-2 Tuesday night in MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball action at York.
The Golden Wolves took the first set 26-24 and the second set 25-23, but the Spartans grabbed the third set 25-19, the fourth set 25-17 and the final set 15-12 to secure the 3-2 victory.
Alvernia took an early 7-4 lead in the first set thanks to kills from Julianna McGlone, Rachel Sipling and Cierra Roberts.
Both teams grabbed a few points in a row but the Golden Wolves retained the lead, 10-6.
The Spartans responded with four of the next six points to cut the Alvernia lead to two, 12-10.
York then ripped off a 7-4 scoring run to grab the lead for the first time in the set with Morgan Nolte tallying two kills for the Spartans.
The Golden Wolves fought back and went on a scoring run of their own, tallying six of the next nine points to regain the lead at 22-20 late in the third set. McGlone hammered home two kills and Roberts added one during the Alvernia run.
The Spartans mounted a late run at the end of the set and tied the set at 24, but Alvernia's Siping and Jamie Pierce hammered home back to back kills to take the first set 26-24.
Alvernia jumped out to another early lead in the second set thanks to three kills from Sipling to take a 7-3 advantage over the Spartans.
York bounced back with three straight points to cut the lead to 7-6.
The Golden Wolves responded with a 7-2 scoring run to extend its lead to six, 14-8 and force a Spartan timeout. McGlone tallied a kill during the run and Jordan Thompson tallied an ace.
York then recorded a 8-3 scoring run to pull within one late in the second set, 17-16. Roberts ended the Spartan scoring run with a kill to make it 18-16 Golden Wolves.
The Golden Wolves then pushed the lead to 20-17, but the Spartans responded with a 6-4 scoring run of their own to pull within one, 24-23 late in the second set. The run did not last for long as Sipling hammered home the set winning kill and her sixth of the set thanks to an assist from Patrica Falar to take the set 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
York jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the third set but the Golden Wolves fought back and tallied a 7-5 run to pull within one, 9-8. Sipling tallied two kills during the run, Roberts tallied one and Lindsay Ferguson added one.
The Spartans then continued to consistently grab points, taking seven of the next 11 points to extend the lead to 15-12 York.
Alvernia then tallied four straight points with Roberts hammering home a kill and Pierce tallied an ace to give the Golden Wolves their first lead of the set, 16-15.
The Spartans responded with five straight points thanks to three kills from Gianna Krinock and regained the lead, 20-16.
York then tallied five of the final eight points of the set to take the third set 25-19 and grab one back in the match, 2-1.
York started the fourth set with a 3-0 run, but the Golden Wolves responded with five straight points to take a 5-3 lead. Sipling hammered home two kills during the run.
The Spartans then ripped off a 12-1 scoring run to take a 15-6 lead in the fourth set. Jennifer Taylor tallied two kills and Nolte tallied a kill for York.
Both teams traded points back and forth with the Spartans maintaining a six point, 23-16 advantage.
The Golden Wolves grabbed three points, but York tallied two of the final three points to take a 25-17 win in set four and send the match to the deciding fifth set.
York jumped out to an early 4-1 lead but the Golden Wolves went on a 4-1 lead of their own to tie the set at five. Falar recorded an ace during the run.
Alvernia then grabbed the lead after the Spartans tallied two points, the Golden Wolves grabbed three straight thanks to an ace from Pierce and a block from Ferguson and Roberts to take an 8-7 lead.
The Spartans and the Golden Wolves traded points back and forth before York tallied two straight thanks to two kills from Nolte to take a two point, 9-11 lead and force an Alvernia time out.
Alvernia came out of the timeout and ripped off three straight thanks to a kill from Sipling and an ace from McGlone to take a 12-11 lead and force the Spartans to call timeout.
York regrouped in the timeout and came out and rattled off the final four points to take the fifth set 15-12 and secure the 3-2 comeback victory.
Sipling led the Golden Wolves with a team high 21 kills, she added 11 digs and two blocks. Falar recorded 37 assists and Abigail McGinley added 27 digs.
The Golden Wolves are back in action on Thursday when they host Neumann University at 7:00 PM in the PEC.
