Golden Wolves and Cougars Play to 1-1 Draw, Chatham Takes Shootout, 2-1

Reading, Pa (January, 20, 2024) - Alvernia University (8-6-2, 6-5-2) played to a 1-1 draw with Chatham University (8-3-3, 6-3-2) but the Cougars secured the 2-1 advantage in the shootout in a UCHC women's ice hockey matchup Saturday night at BodyZone.  

The Cougars scored in the first 35 seconds of the first period and the Golden Wolves leveled the score in the final 11 seconds of the first period. Both teams were unable to put the puck into the back of the net in the final two periods and overtime as the game went to a shootout. Chatham then took the shootout by a score of 2-1 to secure the shootout victory. 

How it Happened 
  • Chatham opened the scoring up just 35 seconds in the contest when Brooke Almond found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Allison Corser-James to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead early. 
  • The Golden Wolves found the equalizer with ten seconds left in the first period when Khenzie Connick found Julia Franklin who fired the puck past the Chatham goalie to level the score at one heading into the first intermission. 
  • A scoreless second period was highlighted by Chatham recording 11 shots on goal to Alvernia's six. Kayla Moriarty, Carolyn Burton, Amber Steinhilpert, Riley Hill, Sofia King and Sikke Ask all recorded shots on goal in the second period for Alvernia. 
  • Alvernia flipped the script in the third period by outshooting Chatham 14-5 but neither team was able to score the puck as the game headed into an extra five minutes of hockey. 
  • After 45 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Cougars and the Golden Wolves headed into a shootout, locked at one. 
  • Kaylynn Savoy was the first to go for Chatham but was denied by Alvernia's Julia Beaven. Amber Steinhilpert shot first for the Golden Wolves and found the back of the net to give Alvernia a 1-0 advantage in the shootout. 
  • Ally Nolan then responded by converting her opportunity and Chatham goalie Lindsey Batz denied Alvernia's Connick to keep the shootout level at one heading into the third round. 
  • Both Alvernia and Chatham were unable to score in the third round of the shootout as it headed to sudden death. 
  • Corser-James put the puck in the net for the Cougars on the fourth attempt and Kathryn Palmer was unable to score as the Cougars took the shootout, 2-1. 

Inside the Box Score
  • The Golden Wolves tallied ten more shots on goal than the Cougars, outshooting them 34-24. 
  • Chatham recorded 14 blocked shots on the night compared to Alvernia's seven. 
  • Alvernia's Beaven recorded 23 saves in net for the Golden Wolves.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow when they host Chatham for game two of the weekend series. Tomorrow's matchup was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon but was postponed due to weather and is being played at Reading's Santander Area, puck drop set for 1:00 PM.
