Alvernia Takes 69-62 Win Over Albright for Regular Season Sweep

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 27, 2024) - Alvernia University Women's Basketball used a 13-0 fourth quarter to run to power past Albright, 69-62, in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Albright.

Alvernia led much of the way, but Albright tied it up at 51-51. A Jordan Karmonick layup sparked a 13-0 run that gave Alvernia 64-51 lead. Alvernia held off the Lions from there for the 69-62 win.

With the win, Alvernia improved to 12-7 overall in MAC Commonwealth play. The Lions dropped to 7-12 overall and 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth play.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia scored the opening points of the game off a 3-pointer by Jordan Karmonick and the Golden Wolves led 5-2 after two possessions following a Kayla Williams jumper.
  • Alvernia continued to maintain at least a possession lead following a trading of points with the Lions and the Golden Wolves led 11-6 midway through the first quarter after a Meghan Ruth layup off a Williams steal.
  • The Lions got within three, 11-8, on a putback layup with 4:26 to play. But, Alvernia pushed it to a six point game, 18-12, with 1:48 to play following a Ryleigh Poole 3-pointer.
  • Albright scored the final four points of the quarter to make it an 18-16 game going into the second frame.
  • The Lions tied it up at 18-18 with the first points of the second quarter. But, Alvernia retook the lead, 20-18, on a Ruth layup. Ruth's layup sparked a 12-0 for the Golden Wolves that gave them a 30-18 lead with 4:26 to play in the half. Ruth led Alvernia with six points during the run.
  • The Lions responded with an 8-2 run to close out the half and make it a six point game, 32-26, going into the break. 
  • Alvernia pushed it to a nine point lead, 35-26, with a 3-pointer from Taliyah Malone to open the second half. Just over a minute later, Alvernia made it a ten point game, 38-28 with a 3-pointer from Tamia Wessels.
  • A jumper from Karmonick with 6:10 to play in the quarter kept Alvernia at a ten point advantage, 40-30, but Albright went on an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to cut Alvernia's lead down to four, 42-38, with 3:32 to play in the third.
  • A Jordyn Ingelido jumper pushed Alvernia's lead back up to six, 44-38, with 2:34 to play in the quarter. But, a quick five points from Albright brought the Lions within one, 44-43, with 1:40 to play in the quarter.
  • A Kylie Bradfrod layup gave Alvernia a bit of breathing room and a free throw from Williams marked the final point of the third quarter as Alvernia took a 47-43 lead into the fourth.
  • The Lions tied it up at 49-49 and again at 51-51 through three minutes of fourth quarter action. A layup from Karmonick gave Alvernia the lead back at 53-51 and Alvernia did not let the lead go the rest of the way. 
  • Karmonick's layup sparked a 13-0 run that gave the Golden Wolves a 64-51 lead with 2:50 to play. Karmonick scored eight during the run and Ingelido added four.
  • The Lions did not threaten the rest of the way as Alvernia made five of its six free throws in the final 90 seconds and came away with the 69-62 win.

Inside the Box Score
  • Williams led Alvernia with 19 points and added 12 rebounds for the double-double. She also had a team-high seven assists and eight blocks.
  • Karmonick also had a double-double for Alvernia with 17 points and ten rebounds.

Of Note
  • Williams' eight blocks marked an individual season-high for the Golden Wolves. It was the most in a game for an individual since Cathryn Kramer had 13 en route to a triple-double in December of 2021.
  • Williams combined with Meghan Ruth for a total of 11 team blocks, which also marks a team season-high for Alvernia.
  • Alvernia picked up the regular season sweep over the Lions and has now won three straight against Albright.
  • Alvernia improved to 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth play with the win and is in fourth in conference standings.
