Alvernia Sweeps Home Tri-Match

Reading, Pa (October 26, 2024) - Alvernia University (11-12) took down Rutgers-Newark (10-15) and Brooklyn College (12-11) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's volleyball tri-match at Alvernia. 

Prior to the first match against Rutgers-Newark, Alvernia Women's Volleyball recognized their 2024 senior class. 

The Golden Wolves took down Rutgers-Newark in four sets, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14, 26-24 and then defeated Brooklyn in four sets, 23-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-14 to secure the two match sweep.

How it Happened 
  • The Golden Wolves took a 6-2 lead to start the first set of the first match but then the Raiders went on a 8-6 run to cut the Alvernia lead to one, 11-10. Allison Wolf recorded three kills for the Golden Wolves during the stretch. The Golden Wolves then ripped off a 14-4 scoring run to end the first set and take a 25-14 victory. Patricia Falar had four kills, Kayleigh Kehler added three and Jamie Pierce had another for Alvernia. 
  • The Raiders and the Golden Wolves traded points back and forth to start the second set with the Golden Wolves taking a four point, 15-11 lead over the Raiders. Rutgers-Newark then tallied six of the next eight points to tie the set at 17. Alvernia tallied two points in a row to take a 19-17 lead but the Raiders responded by ending the set on an 8-4 run to take the second set 25-23 and tie the match at one. 
  • The Golden Wolves came out hot in the third set and jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the set. Alvernia continued to pile it on as they took a commanding 15-6 lead over the Raiders in the third set. Kehler had four kills, Allie Evangelista had another two and Hailey McDevitt and Pierce both recorded a kill for Alvernia. Rutgers-Newark then tallied an 8-3 run to cut the Alvernia lead to just four, 18-14, but the Golden Wolves tallied the final seven points of the set to take it 25-14 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. 
  • Alvernia and Rutgers-Newark traded points back and forth again before the Raiders took a four point, 12-8 lead but the Golden Wolves turned things around with a 10-4 run to swing the lead in their favor, 18-16. The Raiders responded with six straight points to regain the lead, 22-18 but the Golden Wolves ended the set on yet another scoring run, this one an 8-2 stretch that secured the 26-24 victory in the fourth set and secured a 3-1 victory in the match.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia and Brooklyn battled back and forth to start the first set as the set was tied at 11. Hailey McDevitt tallied four kills for Alvernia, Allison Wolf and Kayleigh Kehler both had two. Alvernia then took a 18-13 lead over the Bulldogs but Brooklyn then went on a 7-1 run to take a one point, 20-19 lead and force an Alvernia timeout. The Bulldogs then ended the first set by scoring five of the final nine points to take set one 25-23. 
  • Both teams battled to start the second set before the Golden Wolves grabbed a 13-7 lead to force a Brooklyn timeout. The Golden Wolves continued to control the set with a 5-1 run coming out of the timeout to extend the lead to ten, 18-8. Alvernia then ended the set with a 7-6 stretch to secure the second set 25-14 and tie the match up at one. McDevitt recorded seven kills during the set, Olivia Rohrbaugh tallied three, Wolf had two and Pierce had one. 
  • The Bulldogs were the ones to take an early lead in the third set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead over the Golden Wolves. Alvernia then swung things in its favor, ripping off a 9-2 run that gave them a 12-11 lead over the Bulldogs. The Golden Wolves continued to dominate the end of the third set, ripping off another big scoring run, 13-1 to end the set and secure the 25-12 victory in the third set and take a 2-1 match lead. 
  • Alvernia got out to yet another lead early in the final set of the day, an 11-8 lead over the Bulldogs but Brooklyn scored three straight to make it 11-10 and forced the Golden Wolves to take a timeout. The Golden Wolves came out of the timeout and never looked back as they ripped off a 14-4 scoring run, including a beautiful Kayleigh Kehler ace to end the set and secure a 25-14 set four victory and also a 3-1 match victory for the Golden Wolves. Wolf and Evangelista both had four kills during the set, Julianna McGlone had three and both Kehler and McDevitt tallied two apiece. 
Inside the Box Score 
  • Hailey McDevitt led the way offensively with a career high 21 kills, she added a team high four aces, posted 13 digs and dished out 17 assists. 
  • Allison Wolf recorded ten kills and three blocks, Allie Evangelista added a team high five blocks and recorded seven kills. 
  • Abigail McGinley tallied 21 digs and had two aces.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action on Tuesday when they host Widener for a MAC Commonwealth matchup at 7:00 PM in Alvernia's P.E.C.
