York Tops Alvernia in MAC Opener, 2-1

York, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2024) - York College (8-0-4, 1-0) scored the game-winner in the 75th minute to down Alvernia University (5-4-3, 0-1) in the MAC Commonwealth opener on Saturday in men's soccer action at York.

Alvernia took the 1-0 lead late in the 28th minute off a wild goal from Dominic Flowers. The Spartans evened it at 1-1 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. York then scored the game-winner in the 75th minute. York did not allow a shot on net in the final 15 minutes as the Spartans remained undefeated.

How it Happened
  • Joshue Avila had an early look for Alvernia in the opening seconds of the contest, but York made the save to keep it 0-0 early on.
  • York then took over offensive control over the next 20 minutes of action. Alvernia did not record a shot while the Spartans fired four off on the Golden Wolves. Two Spartan shots were blocked and the other two were saved by Evan Solley to keep the game at 0-0.
  • In the 28th minute, Alvernia scored following a nearly 20 second scrabble. Connor Kraycik started the series of shots off with an opportunity that went wide. Zeke Zambrano picked up the loose ball and fired in a shot that was saved. Ryan Cogill had an attempt that was blocked and Evan Bauer had one that was a team save for the Spartans. Flowers then got his head on the ball after it hit off of three different Spartans. Flowers' header went high and dropped down right behind the Spartan keeper to put Alvernia on the board.
  • The Golden Wolves and Spartans traded shots on goal over the next 13 minutes, but both York's keeper and Alvernia's Evan Solley made stops.
  • York evened the game at 1-1 in the 43rd minute. York's Aiden Hall sent in a pass through the box off the end line to Ricky Cicmanec, who was a few feet off the left post. Cicmanec fired the ball in just past the reach of Solley to equalize the game at 1-1.
  • Alvernia came out of the half and had four shots in the first 11 minutes. But,  two were off target, one was blocked, and the fourth was saved to keep the game at 1-1.
  • The Spartans and Golden Wolves traded one shot on goal each over the next 16 minutes, but both goalies saved their respective looks.
  • York then broke through to break the tie in the 75th minute. York's Luke Nall tapped in a cross from Tyler Howlett to take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Spartans did not allow Alvernia to have a look on goal in the final 15 minutes as York came away with the 2-1 win.
