Alvernia Downs Stockton in Comeback Fashion, 69-62

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 16, 2024) - Alvernia Women's Basketball (1-2) outscored Stockton University (2-1) 45-27 in the second half to complete a late comeback and defeat the Osprey 69-62 on Saturday night in non-conference women's basketball action at Alvernia.

The Osprey led 23-14 after the first quarter and took a 35-24 lead into the half. Alvernia cut the Stockton lead down to eight entering the fourth quarter, and the Golden Wolves shut down the Osprey in the final ten minutes. Alvernia outscored Stockton 23-8 in the final ten minutes and took the lead with under two minutes to play to complete the comeback and take a 69-62 win to grab its first win of the 2024 season.

How it Happened
  • Stockton led 8-2 early in the first quarter with Alvernia's only two points of the opening three and a half minutes coming from a Kylie Bradford layup.
  • Alvernia cut it down to an 8-7 game with 5:06 to play in the first quarter on an Olivia Burke layup, and Alvernia took the lead, 9-8 on a Bradford layup with 4:31 to play in the first quarter.
  • Stockton retook the lead with a 3-pointer on its next possession, and the Osprey began to build some separation in the final two and a half minutes of the quarter to take a 23-14 lead into the second frame.
  • Back-to-back field goals from Jennah DeGout brought Alvernia back within five, 23-18, to open the second quarter, and Alvernia cut the Stockton lead down to three later in the quarter on a pair of made free throws from Bradford with 5:50 to play in the half. But, Stockton went on a 10-2 run to close out the half and take a 35-24 lead into the break.
  • After a trading of points to open the second half, a DeGout layup sparked an 8-2 run over the next two and a half minutes that brought Alvernia within four, 39-35, with six minutes to play in the quarter. All eight of Alvernia's points during the run came from DeGout.
  • Stockton responded with a 12-6 run of its own over the next 4:15 of game time to push its lead back up to ten, 51-41, with 1:14 to play in the quarter. But, a 3-point play from Jordyn Ingelido and a DeGout jumper as the horn sounded brought Alvernia within eight, 54-46 heading into the final ten minutes.
  • Alvernia hit the ground running to open the fourth quarter as Paige O'Brien knocked down an opening possession 3-pointer to kickoff an 8-2 run over the next four minutes. The run was capped by an Ingelido 3-pointer to make it a two point game, 56-54, with 6:09 to play.
  • The Osprey and Golden Wolves traded points over the next four minutes until a Bradford layup brought Alvernia within one, and DeGout hit the go-ahead jumper with 1:51 to play to give Alvernia the 62-61 lead - it's first lead since the brief one it held in the first quarter.
  • The Golden Wolves held off the Osprey from there, allowing just one Stockton point in the final two minutes as Alvernia built up its lead on made free throws. The Golden Wolves took the game, 67-62, to pick up their first win of the season.
