Golden Wolves Fall to Scarlet Raiders, 2-1, in ECAC Semifinal

Newark, N.J. (November 17, 2024) - Alvernia University (11-9-3) fell to Rutgers-Newark (10-6-4) 2-1, Sunday afternoon in an ECAC men's soccer semifinal matchup at Rutgers-Newark. 

The Golden Wolves and the Scarlet Raiders were tied at one after the first 45 minutes of play but Rutgers-Newark netted the game winner in the 56th minute to secure the 2-1 victory and advance to the final. 

How it Happened 
  • The Scarlet Raiders got on the board first in the 22nd minute after Edgar Silva converted a penalty kick to give Rutgers-Newark a 1-0 advantage. 
  • The Golden Wolves responded ten minutes later with a penalty kick of their own after Ryan Cogill stepped up to the spot and converted the opportunity to level the game at one heading into the halftime break. 
  • Rutgers-Newark were awarded another penalty in the 56th minute of the contest with a chance to take a 2-1 lead. Silva stepped up to the spot but his opportunity was initially saved by Alvernia's Evan Solley but Silva finished the rebound to give the Scarlet Raiders a 2-1 advantage with 35 minutes to play in the half. 
  • The Golden Wolves sent ten shots at the Rutgers-Newark net with seven going on target but they were unable to find another leveler as the Scarlet Raiders secured the 2-1 victory and a spot in the ECAC title game.
