Alvernia Takes Down Mustangs, 7-2

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 9, 2024) - After trailing early, Alvernia University (4-0, 2-0) scored seven unanswered goals to take a 7-2 win over Stevenson University (0-4, 0-2) on Saturday night in MAC Women's Ice Hockey action at Body Zone.

Alvernia followed an eight-goal performance on Friday night with a seven goal performance on Saturday to secure the series win over Stevenson. Alvernia will have the chance to go for the series sweep of the Mustangs later on in the season when the two teams meet for a third time in February.

How it Happened
  • The Mustangs got out to a much quicker starter in the second meeting of the two teams. Stevenson took a 1-0 lead just 1:43 into the first period, and made it a 2-0 game seven minutes into the period.
  • Alvernia got on the board with 11 minutes to play in the period when Riley Hill scooped a shot deflection up and over the Stevenson goalie to make it 2-1 game.
  • Alvernia had three looks late in the period to even it up, but two attempts were saved and a third was blocked as the game moved into the second period with Stevenson leading, 2-1
  • The Golden Wolves needed just under three minutes of the second period to tie the game at 2-2 when Kaili Klimas netted her first career goal with a rocket of a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
  • Five and a half minutes later, Emma Hart broke the 2-2 with a power-play goal and a putback goal off the initial shot of Sydney Bradley.
  • Alvernia kept it rolling later in the period as Mercedes Melanson ripped in a shot to make it a 4-2 game with three minutes to play in the period.
  • Stephanie Skorupa made eight saves in the second period to keep the Mustangs from tacking onto their total as the game moved into the third period with Alvernia holding the 4-2 lead.
  • The Mustangs slowed Alvernia down through the first 15 minutes of the final frame, but Alvernia broke things back open with three and a half minutes to play. Sikke Ask got things rolling again for Alvernia with a goal off the assist of Melanson and Lauren Jascewsky
  • Hart then netted her second of the night on a short-handed goal with 1:45 to play, and Bradley added one more for the Golden Wolves for good measure with 0.4 seconds left on the clock for the 7-2 final.
