Widener Downs Alvernia, 67-45

Chester, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2024) - Widener University jumped out to a fast start and never looked back as the Pride defeated Alvernia University 67-45 on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Widener.

Widener led Alvernia by nine after the first quarter and by as much as 28 late.

With the loss, Alvernia drops to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Pride improved to 19-4 overall and 9-3 in conference play. 

How it Happened
  • The Pride led Alvernia 13-4 after the first quarter of action and extended their lead to 20-4 through the first minute and a half of the second quarter.
  • Widener continued to push the pace early in the second quarter and led by 19, 30-11, with 4:36 to play in the half.
  • A 3-pointer from Jordan Karmonick sparked some life into the Golden Wolves and sparked a 10-3 run for Alvernia to end the half. Widener led Alvernia 33-21 at the break.
  • Alvernia struggled to find its rhythm coming out of the half as Widener held the Golden Wolves scoreless for the first nearly four minutes of the half. Widener pushed its lead 40-21 during Alvernia's scoreless stretch.
  • A 3-pointer from Aaliyah Ferrer put Alvernia on the board in the second half and brought Alvernia back within 16, 40-24, but that marked Alvernia's only basket for another five minutes as Widener pushed its lead up to 27, 51-24, with 1:29 to play in the quarter.
  • Widener led Alvernia 55-29 going into the final frame.
  • Alvernia outscored the Pride 16-12 in the final 10 minutes, but Alvernia never threatened Widener's lead as the Pride came away with the 67-45 win.

  • Morgan Janeski led Alvernia with a career-high 19 points in 25 minutes of action. Janeski shot 8-for-16 with two made 3-pointers. 
  • Jordan Karmonick finished with 10 points and a team-high eight boards.
  • Mia Robbins led the Pride with 22 points.
  • Alvernia shot just 18-for-71 overall and 6-for-28 from 3-point range.

Of Note
  • With the loss, Alvernia has now lost three straight to Widener. The Golden Wolves last defeated the Pride in November of 2022.
  • With the loss, Alvernia is now tied for fourth in conference standings at 6-6 with Albright. The Golden Wolves have the tiebreaker over the Lions after sweeping the season series.
  • York is in third in standings at 7-5
