Golden Wolves Take Two, Complete Conference Sweep of Lions

Kelly Tallies 100th Career Hit and Win on Mound in Game One

Reading, Pa. (March 30, 2024) - Alvernia University (13-9, 6-3) completed the MAC Commonwealth series sweep over Albright College (4-16, 0-9) in dominating fashion on Saturday afternoon at Alvernia. 

Alvernia took game one - a designated seven inning game - 10-1. Alvernia then run-ruled the Lions in eight innings in game two, 11-1.

Alvernia outscored the Lions 35-2 during the weekend series with Albright. Alvernia has outscored its opponents 56-11 over its last five games.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run single to center from Matt Edwards to score Mike Ramundo and Jason Kelly.
  • The Golden Wolves then made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the second. Timmy Hitchcock led off the inning with a walk and progressed to third on a sac bunt by Ryan Kopf and a stolen base. Hitchcock then scored on a ground out by Logan Nelson to give Alvernia the 3-0 lead.
  • The Lions got one back in the top of the fourth. Following a two-out double off the wall by Albright's Tommie Lewman, a single to left field from Zander Tesoriere drove in Lewman to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Alvernia added one onto its lead in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly from Edwards to score Jacob Chapman and make it a 4-1 game going into the sixth inning.
  • Alvernia blew it open in the sixth inning. With Garrett Hunter on first, Logan Nelson stepped up and hit a homer over the left field fence to give Alvernia the 6-1 lead. Chapman then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ramundo, and Jason Kelly drove in Noah Waldron on a single through the left side. Matt Edwards capped off the inning with a two-run homer to left field to also score Kelly and give Alvernia the 10-1 lead.
  • Alvernia then retired the side in the top of the seventh to take the first game of the doubleheader, 10-1.

 How it Happened
  • Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Luke Jones – who reached on a double to lead off the inning – scoring on a Mike Ramundo single.
  • The Lions evened it up at 1-1 in the top of the second on a one-run double to left field. The Lions had the bases loaded with two outs later in the inning, but Alvernia was able to get out of the jam with a groundout to the pitcher to keep the game at 1-1 going into the bottom of the second.
  • Alvernia got the run back in the bottom of the second to retake the lead, 2-1, as Garrett Hunter singled through the left side to drive in Timmy Hitchcock, who reached earlier in the inning on a double to the left gap.
  • The Golden Wolves plated two more runs in the bottom of the third on back-to-back sacrifice fly balls from Jason Kelly and Matt Edwards to give Alvernia the 4-1 lead going into the fourth.
  • Alvernia threatened to add onto its lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Wolves had the bases loaded with one out, but Albright struck out the next two Alvernia batters to end the threat.
  • The Golden Wolves once again blew it open in the sixth inning. Alvernia scored its first of the inning on a throwing error by Albright, allowing Timmy Hitchcock to score. Alvernia added another two on a two-run double to the left gap to score Luke Jones and Logan Nelson. A single from Jason Kelly scored Ramundo on the next at bat to give Alvernia the 8-1 lead heading into the seventh.
  • Alvernia added another run in the bottom of the seventh as Hitchcock scored on a single to center from Hunter to give Alvernia the 9-1 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves then secured the run-rule win in the bottom of the eighth. After Jacob Chapman reached on a single, he made his way around the bases on a combo of wild pitches and a passed ball by the Lions. He then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 10-1 game. Ronald Kopcho then drove in Noah Waldron to make it an 11-1 game and end the game on the ten-run run-rule.

Of Note
  • Jason Kelly hit his 100th career hit with his second hit of the day – a single through the left side- in game one of the doubleheader. He went on to also pick up the win on the mound in game one.
  • Alvernia has now won nine of its last ten against Albright. Alvernia has also now pushed its average run total against the Lions to double-digits at 10.2 runs per game since 2006.

  • Alvernia takes a mid-week break from its MAC Commonwealth schedule on Tuesday and will head to former MAC Commonwealth foe Arcadia University. The Knights are now in the MAC Freedom and one game back of Misericordia for the conference lead.
