Reading, Pa. (April 27, 2024) - Alvernia University (6-11, 2-5) capped off its 2024 season in fantastic fashion as
Haleigh Lackner scored her 200th career goal and the Golden Wolves defeated Albright College (2-15, 1-6) for the first time since 2013 on Saturday at Albright.
Lackner had her work cut out for her coming into Saturday. She sat at 194 career goals with one game to play in her career. After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Lackner broke open in the second and third quarters. She hit 200 just over a minute into the fourth quarter and scored her seventh of the day for good measure to finish her career at 201.
Alvernia led 2-0 early before Albright evened it up and took the lead. The Golden Wolves answered and retook the lead heading into the half before giving it back up early in the third quarter. Alvernia then went on a 7-0 run to answer and never looked back as the Golden Wolves defeated the Lions for the first time in over a decade.Â
How it Happened
- Alvernia held a 2-0 lead through the first seven and a half minutes of action following goals from Mackenzie McKinney and Sherrin Smith, but Albright evened it up at 2-2 with two goals to close out the first quarter.
- Albright then took a 3-2 lead with the first goal of the second quarter, but Alvernia evened it at 3-3 with Haleigh Lackner's first of the game with 8:35 to play in the first half. The Lions responded and retook the lead, 4-3, two and a half minutes later.
- Lackner then scored her second of the day to tie the game at 4-4 with 4:55 to play in the half, and Alvernia made it a 5-4 game with Smith's second of the game.Â
- The Golden Wolves pushed the lead to two goals, 6-4, with Hannah Tyler's first career goal with 1:34 to play. But, the Lions scored the final goal of the half with 20 seconds to play to make it a one goal game, 6-5, heading into the second half.
- The Lions scored the opening two goals of the third quarter to take the lead, 7-6. But, Alvernia answered by going off on a 7-0 run in the final ten minutes of the third quarter and the opening minutes of the fourth. Lackner opened the gates to tie it at 7-7 and a goal from Smith gave Alvernia back the lead, 8-7.Â
- An impressive double save by Hannah Wolfe in net boosted the momentum for Alvernia and Lackner added to it with a goal off the assist of McKinney to make it a 10-7 game with 5:05 to play in the quarter.
- A player-up goal from Tyler kept things rolling for Alvernia with 4:21 to play in the third, and a Smith goal off the assist of Lackner gave Alvernia the 11-7 lead going into the fourth.
- Lackner opened the quarter with a goal just 47 seconds into the quarter as she hit 199. She then wasted no time scoring 200, hitting the milestone just under 40 seconds later on a free position goal to give Alvernia the 13-7 lead.
- Albright scored four of the next six goals, but Alvernia still led by four, 15-11, with four minutes to play.
- Olivia McCambly and and McKinney then put the game away for Alvernia with a goal each in the final two minutes to make it a 17-11 game. Albright scored the final goal of the game with 47 seconds to play, but it was too little too late as the Golden Wolves came away with the 17-12 win.Â
