Golden Wolves Upset #2 Red Dragons in 3-2 Thriller

Reading, Pa (September 14, 2024) - Alvernia University (4-1-1) put three goals past #2 Cortland University (5-1-1) en route to a 3-2 victory over the Red Dragons Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's soccer matchup at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves tallied two goals in the first 20 minutes and then added a third in the 51st minute to take a 3-0 lead. The Red Dragons then tallied two goals in the final 23 minutes of the second half but the Alvernia defense held strong to secure the 3-2 victory over the Red Dragons.

How it Happened

  • Kraycik sent in a fantastic ball up to Ryan Cogill, who was crashing in on the right side. Cogill got around the goalie and beat a defender before firing a shot inside the right post just past the foot of another defender from Cortland making a last ditch effort on the save.
  • Dominic Flowers made it 2-0 in the 18th minute after Flowers was able to one-touch control the ball after Cortland tried to clear it with a header. Flowers then fired a missile of shot on goal and jammed up the Cortland keeper on the volley to make it a two goal game.
  • Solley made a great 1v1 save against #10 in the 11th minute to keep the Red Dragons off the board. Solley followed that with another great save about five minutes later on a close shot to again keep it a 2-0 game.
  • Cristian Topovich had a look to make it 3-0, but it went just wide of the left post in the 41st minute as the Golden Wolves took a 2-0 lead into the half.
  • Alvernia came out and made it 3-0 in the first six minutes of the second half after Cogill won a penalty. Cogill then stepped up and blasted his penalty attempt past the Cortland keeper and into the back of the net to make it a three goal game.
  • The Red Dragons grabbed one back in the 68th minute after Cade Denglinger assisted Jack Sargent to make it 3-1.
  • Cortland cut the lead to one in the 80th minute when Yasin Choukri assisted Jack Pinnata to make it 3-2 in the final ten minutes of the game.
  • The Red Dragons put six shots on the Alvernia net with two going on net but Solley tallied two saves to secure the 3-2 victory over the #2 ranked Red Dragons.
