Jordyn Ingelido hit a last-second putback layup to secure a 79-77 win for Alvernia (9-7, 3-2) over Eastern University (2-14, 1-4) on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball at Alvernia.
In a game that was back-and-forth from the jump, Alvernia looked to have the contest secured with a ten point lead and under four minutes to play. But, Eastern found its way back in and tied the game at 77-77 with 25 seconds to play following a 17-7 that included 5-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Alvernia had the final shot with six seconds to go, but could not get its initial shot to fall. Ingelido came in and grabbed the rebound and sent up the putback attempt, which fell through the net with one second on the clock to secure the 79-77 win for the Golden Wolves.
How it Happened
- The Eagles opened the scoring with an early 3-pointer, and Alvernia got on the board on its next possession with a pair of made free throws by Kylie Bradford. The back-and-forth got underway early from there, with Alvernia retaking the lead for the first time, 5-3, on a Jennah DeGout jumper after Jordyn Ingelido tied the game at 3-3 a few moments earlier.
- The Eagles took a 9-7 lead with 6:32 to play in the opening quarter after making their third 3-pointer of the young game, but then the scoring went cold for the next two minutes. Alvernia got things started with 4:45 to play in the quarter as Olivia Burke tied it up at 9-9 with a layup off an Ingelido steal.
- It was another two minutes before a basket was recorded again, as Eastern continued to rely on the deep ball and took a 12-9 lead on another made 3-pointer. The back and forth continued with Paige O'Brien knocking down a 3-pointer of her own to make it a 12-12 game with 1:45 to play in the quarter.
- Eastern was poised to take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter, but Kyla Reed hit a pull-up 3-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter to give Alvernia the 15-14 lead heading into the second frame.
- The Eagles retook the lead, 16-15, with a jumper on the opening possession of the second quarter, and held the lead for the first two minutes of the quarter until a layup from Kylie Bradford gave Alvernia back the lead, 19-18.
- Alvernia pushed its lead to five, 24-19, later in the quarter on a layup from Burke with seven minutes to play in the half. But, the Eagles worked their way right back and tied the game at 24-24 on a 3-pointer with 5:54 to play in the half.
- Eastern took its turn holding the lead for the next two and a half minutes, but Aaliyah Ferrer gave the lead back to Alvernia, 29-27 on a 3-pointer with 3:16 to play in the half. The Golden Wolves held onto the lead for the final minutes of the half and took a 33-31 lead into the half.
- The Golden Wolves came out of the half with some new energy and took a four point lead, 35-31, on a layup from Ingelido off a Ryleigh Poole steal to open the half.
- The Golden Wolves found their rhythm, and a few minutes into the half, Alvernia was able to push its lead to seven, 42-35, on a Poole 3-pointer and layup from Ingelido. As the quarter approached its midpoint, Alvernia continued to keep it rolling and made it a ten point game, 50-40, on an O'Brien 3-pointer with 5:14 to play in the third.
- Alvernia held at least a five point lead for the remainder of the quarter, and led 56-50 going into the final ten minutes.
- The Golden Wolves and Eagles traded points through the opening minutes of the quarter, before Eastern started to back in. A layup from Eastern's Dominque Geiger brought the Eagles within three, 63-60, with 5:27 to play. But, a layup from DeGout and a Burke 3-pointer gave Alvernia back some breathing room, 68-60, with 4:34 to play. Less than a minute later, a Bradford jumper extended Alvernia's lead back to ten, 70-60, with under four minutes to play.
- The Eagles continued to hang around and began to chip back away at Alvernia's lead. A pair of 3-pointers by Eastern with under a minute to play brought the Eagles within two, 76-74, with 25 seconds to play.
- Eastern sent Alvernia to the line twice over the next five seconds of game play. But, Alvernia made just one of the ensuing four attempts to make it just a 74-77 with 20 seconds to play.
- Eastern called a timeout to advance the ball, and threw up an off-balance 3-pointer on the inbounds play with seven seconds to play. The shot fell through the net to tie the game up at 77-77.
- This time Alvernia called a timeout to advance the ball into its offensive zone. Alvernia inbounded and found DeGout under the basket. DeGout put up a layup under pressure, but it did fall. Ingelido quickly grabbed the rebound for Alvernia and threw up an attempt of her own This one did fall with one second to spare to give Alvernia the 79-77 win.
Inside the Box Score
- Jennah DeGout finished with a season-high 31 points. Her 31 points is her highest since joining Alvernia mid-season during the 2022-23 season. She also finished tonight with a team-high nine rebounds. DeGout did not record a foul on the night in 28 minutes of action.
- Jordyn Ingelido finished with a career-high 13 points, including the game-winning layup.
- Kylie Bradford was the third player to finish in double-digits for Alvernia, finishing the night with 11 points.
- Both Olivia Burke and DeGout finished with a team-high four assists.
- Eastern finished the game shooting 66.7% from 3-point range - including a 6-for-7 performance from Jeriyah Johnson.
