Golden Wolves Blow Past Wilkes, 60-39

Reading, Pa. (January 4, 2025)Alvernia University (6-5) picked up a 60-39 win against Wilkes University (0-11) in its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.
Alvernia led wire-to-wire in the win, taking a 2-0 lead early and never looking back. Alvernia held Wilkes to just 13 points in the first half and it is the first time the Golden Wolves have held an opponent to under 40 points since a 69-34 win over Rutgers Camden on November 27, 2023.

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless opening two minutes for both sides, Alvernia's Olivia Burke opened the scoring with a putback layup to give Alvernia the early 2-0 lead. Seconds later, Jennah DeGout hit a pull-up jumper to make it a 4-0 lead in favor of the Golden Wolves. DeGout kept it rolling with a pair of made free throws to give Alvernia the 6-0 lead through four minutes of action.
  • Scoring slowed back down for both sides, and Wilkes scored the only points over the next three minutes to cut Alvernia's lead in half, 6-3, with 3:48 to play in the half. But, DeGout got Alvernia rolling again with a layup off the assist of Jordyn Ingelido, and Alvernia outscored the Colonels 8-5 the remainder of the quarter to take a 14-8 lead going into the second frame.
  • A layup from Paige O'Brien opened the second quarter for Alvernia and ignited an 11-2 run for the Golden Wolves through the first five minutes of the quarter. Ingelido led Alvernia during the run with four points. Alvernia went on to outscore the Colonels 13-5 in the quarter and take a 27-13 lead into the half.
  • Wilkes opened the second half with a 3-pointer to cut Alvernia's lead down to 11, 27-16, and the Golden Wolves and Colonels traded baskets for the first few minutes of the half until Alvernia began to really pull away with seven minutes to play in the quarter.
  • A pair of made free throws from O'Brien and a DeGout Jumper started a 14-5 run for Alvernia over the final seven minutes of the quarter as Alvernia took a 20 point lead, 45-25, going into the final ten minutes. O'Brien led Alvernia in the third quarter with eight points, and DeGout added six more to her line.
  • Alvernia continued to roll in the final ten minutes and used a 9-2 run to open the quarter to push its lead to 27, 54-27, with  7:12 to play in the fourth. The Colonels never threatened the rest of the way as Alvernia took the 60-39 win.
