Golden Wolves Take Down Blazers in OT, 2-1

Frederick, Md. (November 1, 2025) - Alvernia University (8-11, 3-4) took down Hood College (8-10, 3-4), 2-1, in overtime thanks to an Ava Michael penalty stroke goal in the second overtime period Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth matchup at Hood.

The Blazers struck first in the second quarter and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. The Golden Wolves then leveled the score final ten minutes of regulation after Ava Michael netted her first goal of the game thanks to a Sofia Mollura assist made it 1-1 heading to overtime. Michael then netted the game winner after converting a penalty stroke in the 76th minute to secure the 2-1 victory.

Despite the win, Alvernia's season concluded on Saturday. Two independent tie-breakers were broken to determine seeding. The NPI was used to break the tie for the #1 seed between Stevenson, Messiah and York - placing the Mustangs as the top-seed. Because of that outcome, the tie for the fourth seed between Alvernia, Hood, and Widener could be broken for the final playoff spot. It came down to score differential, pulling Alvernia off of the tie and giving Hood its first ever MAC postseason berth.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves dominated the offensive side of the game in the first quarter of play and tallied eight shots with four going on goal and won five penalty corners but were unable to put the ball into the back of the net.
  • The Blazers then grabbed the lead in the final five minutes of the first half after Kate Haufe found the back of the net in the 26th minute to give Hood a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
  • The Golden Wolves came out flying in the second half and controlled the attacking third with five shots and three shots on target but were unable to find the lead as the game headed to the fourth quarter with the Blazers holding a one goal lead.
  • Alvernia then found the equalizer just under five minutes into the fourth quarter after Sofia Mollura assisted Ava Michael who put the ball into the back of the cage and tied the game at one with ten to play.
  • The Golden Wolves fended off one last surge by the Blazers after a penalty corner was awarded to Hood with the Golden Wolves down a player due to a card. Hood's Ellie Dainton fired a shot on goal but Alvernia's Katelyn Goodwin recorded a defensive save to deny the Blazers and send the game to overtime tied at one.
  • Alvernia were the only ones to record a shot in the first overtime period after Michael had a shot saved and Kelsy McClintock sent a shot wide as the game headed to the second overtime period.
  • The Golden Wolves found the game winner in the final five minutes of the second overtime period after Alvernia was awarded a penalty stroke after a Hood foul in the circle. Michael then stepped up to the spot and buried her attempt to seal the 2-1 victory for the Golden Wolves.
