Alvernia University Announces Change in Football Leadership

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 16, 2025) – Alvernia University Director of Athletics and Recreation Cory Beddick announced on Sunday that Alvernia Football Head Coach Steve Azzanesi was relieved of his duties, effective immediately.

"The success of the football program is a priority for Alvernia University," said Beddick. "The athletic department and Alvernia University are committed to excellence on and off the field, and we want to provide our student-athletes with an exceptional athletic experience"

"When the University elected to add football as a varsity sport prior to the inaugural season in 2017, Alvernia knew it would not always be an easy path. But, the program continues to add significant benefit to the institution," added Beddick. "We are fully committed to the long-term success of the program."

A national search will begin immediately to find Alvernia's next head coach.

In the interim, Angel Guerrero, who has been on Alvernia's staff since 2022 and currently serves as the offensive line coach, will assume interim head coaching duties - including recruitment and academic success – until a new head coach is named.

"We look forward to identifying a head coach that will lead Alvernia Football into a chapter of success, being competitive within the MAC, and ultimately competing at the national level."
Steve Azzanesi was hired as the second head football coach of Alvernia in January of 2022. He has produced a 5-35 record overall and 4-31 in MAC play.

"On behalf of Alvernia, I would like to thank Steve for his time and devotion to not only Alvernia Football, but to the University as whole," said Beddick. "We wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward."
