Golden Wolves Fend Off Cougars, 76-66

Union, N.J. (November 19, 2025) - Alvernia University (3-2) fended off a late game run by Kean University (1-2) to secure the ten point, 76-66 victory over the Cougars in a mid-week non-conference men's basketball matchup at Kean's Harwood Arena. 

Four of the five starters for the Golden Wolves scored in double figures and Robert Cottrell led the way with 17 points for Alvernia. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia came out firing and ripped off ten straight points to start the game and take a 10-0 lead over the Cougars in the first four minutes thanks to four points from Robert Cottrell
  • Kean answered with five straight points and then continued to control the next four minutes of basketball and tallied a 16-5 scoring run to swing the lead in its favor, 16-15, with ten minutes to play in the first half. 
  • The Golden Wolves grabbed the lead back after an Elijah Hamilton jumper and a Kareem Diaz three pointer to put Alvernia up 20-18. 
  • The Cougars and the Golden Wolves traded points and forth over the next four minutes with the Golden Wolves holding a three point, 27-24 lead with under three to go in the first half. 
  • Kean leveled the score at 27 with a three pointer but the Golden Wolves responded again with a Hamilton layup and a Diaz jumper put the Golden Wolves back up four, 31-27 with a minute to play in the half.
  • The Cougars came down the floor and knocked down a three to make it a one point game but the Golden Wolves responded with a Hamilton layup under the basket to push it back to a three point, 33-30 game lead but Kean bounced back with a driving layup by Deaundre Clarke to send the game to the halftime break with the Golden Wolves holding a one point, 33-32 advantage. 
  • Cottrell led the Golden Wolves with nine points in the first half, Hamilton followed with eight points and Mason Jones added seven points for Alvernia. 
  • Kean came out and scored six of the first 11 points of the second half to tie the game at 38 a piece but the Golden Wolves caught fire and ripped off a 25-5 scoring run over the next eight minutes of the game to 63-43 advantage with ten to play. Janye Stanley led the way with eight points and Jones added seven during the stretch for the Golden Wolves. 
  • The Cougars cut the lead down to 16 over the next four minutes with an 11-7 scoring run but the Golden Wolves continued to hold strong as they held a 70-54 advantage. 
  • The Cougars would not go away as then continued to score the basketball and tallied another scoring run, this one a 10-4 scoring run that made it a ten point, 74-64 ballgame with under two minutes to go in the game and forced Alvernia's Mike Miller Jr. to take a timeout. 
  • Kean pulled within eight after a driving layup out of the timeout but the Golden Wolves sealed the deal with two Rasheem Dearry free throws to secure the ten point, 76-66 victory over the Cougars. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Robert Cottrell led the way with 17 points off a 7-9 performance from the floor and also dished out four assists, grabbed two rebounds and added two steals. 
  • Janye Stanley followed with 16 points and four rebounds and knocked down three shots from beyond the arc. 
  • Rasheem Dearry and Elijah Hamilton rounded out the Golden Wolves in double figures with Dearry adding 15 points, six assists and five rebounds and Hamilton finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
