Golden Wolves Drop Home Opener to Blue Jays, 9-7

Reading, Pa (February 26, 2025) - Alvernia University (0-2) dropped a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup to Elizabethtown (2-1) 9-7, Wednesday afternoon at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves 5-4 lead at the half but the Blue Jays tallied five goals in the second half to Alvernia's two en route to the victory.

How it Happened
  • After trailing 2-0 early, Alvernia got on the board on a goal by Lindsay Kerschner just under four minutes into the game. Both teams then went scoreless for seven minutes before Elizabethtown made it a 3-1 game with 4:11 to play in the opening quarter. The Golden Wolves had a couple of opportunities in the final minute of the quarter, but Elizabethtown made two saves to make it a 3-1 game going into the second.
  • The Golden Wolves got within one, 3-2, on a putback shot by Sherrin Smith off the assist of Gracie Brower three minutes into the second quarter. Alvernia then tied the game at 3-3 less than a minute later on the first career goal of Makenna Thomas.
  • After ten minutes of back and forth play, Alvernia took its first lead of the game, 4-3, on Kerschner's second of the night. Thomas then made it a two goal game, 5-3, on a free position goal. But, Elizabethtown got within one, 5-4, 30 seconds later. The Blue Jays were poised to tie the game with under a minute to play, but Alvernia's defense - behind goalie Hanah Wolfe -  held strong to make it a 5-4 game in favor of Alvernia going into the half.
  • The Blue Jays leveled the score at five in the first five minutes of the second half but Alvernia's Smith responded with an unassisted goal three minutes later to grab the lead back, 6-5, with under eight to play in the third.
  • Elizabethtown then netted two goals in the next two minutes to take a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • The Blue Jays came out of the quarter break and netted two goals in the first six minutes of the final quarter to push the lead to three, 9-6.
  • Alvernia's Lindsay Kerchner found the back of the net in the final five minutes of the game but it was not enough as Elizabethtown secured the 9-7 victory over the Golden Wolves.
