Blazers Down Alvernia in Overtime Thriller, 16-15

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 19, 2025) - Hood College (6-9, 2-3) scored the golden-goal 1:33 into overtime to defeat Alvernia University (3-12, 1-4) 16-15 on Saturday afternoon in a back-and-forth MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse thriller at Alvernia.

Alvernia won the opening draw of overtime, but the Blazers made the stop to grab an opportunity of their own. Hood took the ball down field and Rachel Harper found Avery Stanley for the third time as Stanley scored her seventh of the game and the game-winner for the Blazers.

How it Happened

But, the Blazers answered three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 and took the 2-1 lead with just under ten minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Golden Wolves evened the game once again on a free position goal from Sherrin Smith with eight minutes to play in the quarter, but the Blazers scored the final goal of the opening frame to take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.
  • Hood extended its lead to 4-2 with a goal in the opening minute of the second. Alvernia got back within one, 4-3, on Smith's second of the afternoon. But, the Blazers pushed it right back to two, 5-3, after they scored on the ensuing draw control win.
  • Goals from Kerchner and Smith evened the game at 5-5 with 5:27 to play in the opening half. But, the Blazers scored two goals over the next two and a half minutes to extend their lead back to two, 7-5.
  • Alvernia got back within one once again on a goal from Makenna Thomas with a minute and a half to play in the quarter. The Golden Wolves were poised to enter the half trailing by one, but the officials called a foul on Alvernia and the Blazers converted their free position opportunity with eight seconds to play in the half to take the 8-6 lead into the break.
  • Alvernia got back within one with Hannah Tyler scoring for Alvernia to open the half. After the Blazers pushed it back to a two goal differential, 9-7, Smith and Kerchner scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 9-9 with 9:20 to play in the third.
