Second Half Surge Powers Golden Wolves Past Colonels

Wilkes, Pa. (Sep. 6, 2025) - Alvernia University (1-2) scored four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 win over Wilkes University (2-1) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Wilkes' Bruggeworth Field.

After an evenly matched first quarter, the Golden Wolves got on the board in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter on a goal. Alvernia then made it a 2-0 game in the 40th minute, and tacked on three more in the final frame for the 5-0 final as Alvernia handed Wilkes its first loss of the season.

How it Happened
  • Both teams were evenly matched through the first 15 minutes of action, with both the Golden Wolves and Colonels firing four shots off apiece. But, neither team put any on goal as the game moved into the second quarter tied at 0-0.
  • Alvernia had two early corner opportunities in the second quarter, but the Colonels held Alvernia off the board to keep it a 0-0 game.
  • Alvernia then broke through in the 29th minute on a goal from Ava Michael to make it a 1-0 game going into the half. 
  • The Golden Wolves came out of the half pressuring and had three shots and two corner opportunities in the first two minutes of action. But, the Colonels made the stops to keep it a one-goal game. 
  • Alvernia doubled up on its lead in the 40th minute on a goal by Kelsy McClintock to make it a 2-0 game with five minutes to play in the third quarter.
  • The Golden Wolves opened the third quarter with another set of early corner opportunities, and this time they converted as McClintock netted her second of the afternoon to make it a 3-0 game.
  • The Colonels threatened to break Alvernia's shutout bid in the 51st minute. Wilkes was awarded a penalty stroke, and Alvernia goalie Zoe Caloviras made the stop. She then made another save just 20 seconds later with a save off a corner.
  • Alvernia then scored two more goals late. Sofia Mollura scored off a corner with the assist of Michael. Caroline Martin then sealed the game with a goal in the 58th minute for the 5-0 final.
Inside the Box Score
  • Kelsy McClintock led Alvernia with two goals off of three shots on goal. 
  • Ava Michael led Alvernia with ten total shots and finished with one goal and one assist.
  • Zoe Caloviras made seven saves in 54 minutes of action before Jazmin Mayfield subbed in and added another save to the team total of eight.

  • Alvernia will face Wilson on Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup. The game will be played at Shippensburg University at 5:00 PM.
