Alvernia Falls to Penn State York, 3-0

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 8, 2025) - Alvernia University (2-2) dropped its home-opener to Penn State York (2-1), 3-0, on Wednesday evening in non-conference women's volleyball action at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.

The Lions took set one, 25-12. The Golden Wolves closely contested the second and third sets, but the Lions were able to come away with the sweep with 25-23 and 25-22 second and third set wins.

How it Happened
  • The Lions made quick work of the first set, jumping out to an early 9-3 lead. Alvernia got back within four, 9-5, following a Hailey McDevitt kill and a block from Allie Evangelista and McDevitt. But, the Lions went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-7 lead.
  • Penn State York led 24-10 later in the set. The Golden Wolves held off set point twice - with a kill from Evangelista and an Olivia Rohrbaugh ace. But, the Lions secured the set win, 25-12, on an Alvernia attack error.
  • The second set was evenly matched through the early points. With both teams locked at 6-6, Penn State went on a quick 6-2 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Lions led by five for much of the remainder of the set. With the Lions leading 18-12, Alvernia called a timeout and went on a 5-1 run that was capped by a McDevitt kill to close within two, 19-17.
  • The Lions pushed their lead back up to four, 23-19, but three straight kills from Rohrbaugh and Allison Wolf brought Alvernia within one, 23-22. The Golden Wolves then tied it at 23-23 on a Wolf block. But, the Lions secured the second set, 25-23, with back-to-back kills.
  • The Golden Wolves got off to a quick start in the third set, taking a 7-1 lead behind the serve of Caroline Buggy. But, the Lions called a timeout to regroup and fired off an 8-3 run to tie the set at 9-9. The back-and-forth continued from there, with neither team able to gain ground as the set remained tied at 16-16.
  • The Lions built their lead up to three, 19-16, on an ace. But, Alvernia got two back coming out of a timeout with a kill from Evangelista and a Marli Emrich ace to make it 19-18.
  • Penn State pulled back away to a 23-19 lead, but Alvernia got two back once again with back-to-back kills from Evangelista and Rohrbaugh to make it a 23-21 set. The Lions moved to match point on an Alvernia attack error, but Alvernia held it off with a kill from McDevitt. The Lions then secured the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0, on a block.
