Fast Start Powers Lions Past Golden Wolves, 99-78

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 17, 2026) - Albright College (6-9, 2-2) defeated Alvernia University (8-6, 2-2), 99-78, on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Albright.

The Lions jumped to a 12-0 lead through three and a half minutes, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in the opening minutes. Albright pushed its lead to 16, 22-3, through eight minutes and held a 57-32 lead with ten seconds to play in the half. Austin Mbuyi hit a buzzer-beater from just past half court to give Alvernia a small spark going into the half as Albright took the 57-35 lead into the break.

The Golden Wolves opened the second half on a 17-9 run behind nine points from Elijah Hamitlon to chip slightly away at Albright's lead, 66-52, with 16:20 to play. The Golden Wolves then got within 13, 68-55, two minutes later on a Rasheem Dearry 3-pointer. Alvernia got within 13 three more times over the next few minutes. But, Albright pulled back away and a dunk off an Alvernia turnover gave the Lions a 20 point lead, 86-66, with 7:10 to play. The Lions led by at least 18 points the rest of the way as Albright came away with the 99-78 win.

Elijah Hamilton led Alvernia with 26 points off of 8-for-13 shooting. Rasheem Dearry finished with 17 points, including nine points off of three made 3-pointers. 

Albright was led by Qadir Mitchell, who finished with 33 points and went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Albright shot 11-for-23 from 3-point range, and were 8-for-12 in the first half. The Lions also outrebounded Alverni, 46 to 28. The Lions finished with 21 second chance points.

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday at Hood.
