Golden Wolves Soar Past Eagles, 89-64

Reading, Pa. (January 28, 2026) - Alvernia University (10-7, 4-3) got out to a 15 point, 48-33, lead at the halftime break and never looked back as the Golden Wolves flew past Eastern University (6-12, 3-4), 89-64, Wednesday night in a MAC Commonwealth men's basketball clash on Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.

Alvernia's Janye Stanley led all scorers with 24 points and added a game high 12 rebounds. Stanley also knocked down a half court shot at the halftime buzzer to extend the Golden Wolves advantage to 15 heading into the halftime break.

The Golden Wolves held the lead for 38 of the 40 minutes of basketball and led by 29 at one point. Alvernia recorded its third best shooting percentage from the floor with a 53.2% evening from the floor and also knocked down eight three pointers.

How it Happened
  • Rasheem Dearry opened up the scoring in the first minute with a step back jumper but Eastern's Dejuan Taylor answered with a layup to level the score at two a piece.
  • The Golden Wolves and the Eagles would then battle back and forth for the next six minutes of play with each team posting 12 points during the stretch to make it a 14-14 ballgame with under 13 to play in the first half.
  • Janye Stanley then knocked down a pull up jumper to give the Golden Wolves the 16-14 advantage and they never looked back. Stanley's jumper sparked a 16-5 scoring stretch for the Golden Wolves over the next five minutes of play that pushed the lead to 11, 30-19, with seven minutes to play in the half.
  • Stanley continued to score for the Golden Wolves after he and Austin Mbuyi both knocked down big time threes on back to back possessions for the Golden Wolves to push the lead to 15, 36-21, with six to play.
  • Eastern would cut the Alvernia lead to seven, 38-31, after a 10-2 scoring run over the next two and a half minutes but the Golden Wolves answered with yet another Stanley three ball and a 7-2 scoring stretch over the next three minutes to make it 45-33.
  • Stanley capped off an impressive first half with a half court three point bucket to give the Golden Wolves the 15 point, 48-33, lead heading into the break. Stanley corralled a defensive rebound and took a quick peek at the game clock, seeing it was quickly running down he pressed the basketball up the floor and cut it loose with 0.8 left on the clock just in front of the halfcourt logo. All of Jack McCloskey Court watched as the ball hit nothing but the back of the net to count the basket and close out a 16 point first half for the sophomore guard.
  • Eastern came out of the half and cut the lead to 11 after two free throws and a bucket from Dejuan Taylor but the Golden Wolves responded with back to back driving layups from Stanley and Elijah Hamilton to push it back to a 15 point, 52-37 lead.
  • Both teams would go scoreless over the next two minutes before Dearry knocked down two shots from the charity stripe to spark a 10-5 Alvernia run to make it a 20 point, 62-42, ballgame.
  • Eastern responded with ten of the next 16 points of the game but the Golden Wolves still held a 68-52 lead with nine minutes to play in the game.
  • Dearry knocked down a three ball that sparked a 13-3 run over the next five minutes of the game to push the lead to 26, 81-55, with 4:24 to play.
  • The Golden Wolves tallied six of the next ten points before Damon Rawls dished out a behind the back pass to Naji Hamilton who hammered down a one handed jam over an Eastern defender to give the Golden Wolves its largest lead of the night, 89-60, with a minute to play.
