Golden Wolves Run Past Mustangs, 61-50

Owings Mills, Md. (Jan. 31, 2026) - Alvernia University (9-10, 4-4) completed the regular season sweep of Stevenson University (7-12, 4-4), taking a 61-50 win over the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Stevenson University.

Alvernia led 17-8 after the first quarter and built its lead up to 32-20 at the half. The Mustangs got within six early in the third quarter, but Alvernia closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 47-31 into the fourth quarter. Alvernia built its lead up to as much as 21 and never let Stevenson back within ten.

With the win, Alvernia secured the regular season sweep of Stevenson, having defeated the Mustangs at home, 56-52, earlier this month. Alvernia is currently in a three-way tie at 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth standings.

How it Happened
 
  • Alvernia opened the game with an opening possession 3-pointer from Ryleigh Poole, but the Mustangs answered with a three of their own to tie the game at 3-3 through the first minute. After another tie at 5-5, Alvernia rattled off five straight points - including a 3-pointer from Kyla Reed - to take a 10-5 lead through four minutes of action. 
  • Alvernia built its lead up to eight, 16-8, on an Alani White jumper. The Golden Wolves grabbed one more point off a free through to close out the quarter and take a 17-8 lead into the second frame. 
  • The Golden Wolves and Mustangs traded jumpers to open the second quarter, but both then went without a field goal for nearly three minutes. Alvernia got things going again with a putback jumper from Taryn Woodson and took a double-digit lead, 23-12, on another jumper from Woodson with six minutes to play in the half.
  • The Mustangs got back within single digits at the midpoint of the quarter, but Alvernia retook a double-digit advantage, 27-16, on a step back jumper from Jordyn Ingelido with four minutes to play in the second. Ingelido's jumper sparked a quick 7-2 run for the Golden Wolves that built Alvernia's lead up to 14, 32-18, with 1:45 to play in the half. Stevenson scored the final two points of the half as Alvernia took a 32-20 lead into the break.
  • The Mustangs held Alvernia scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half as Stevenson closed within six, 32-26. But, Alvernia responded and got on the board for the half with a Kyla Reed 3-pointer. Alvernia then built its lead back up to ten, 38-28, on a White jumper and free throw. Stevenson got back within single digits once more, 38-31, but Alvernia closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 47-31 lead into the final ten minutes. The run and quarter was capped by a Samantha Wade 3-pointer to close the frame.
  • Alvernia opened the fourth quarter with a Meghan Ruth jumper and continued to build its lead from there. The Golden Wolves took as much as a 21 point lead, 59-38, on a Jennah DeGout layup with 5:46 to play. The Mustangs held Alvernia to just two points the rest of the way, but Stevenson never got back within single digits as Alvernia took the 61-50 win.
