Golden Wolves Survives Shootout Against Blazers to Cap off Homecoming Weekend, 2-1

Reading, Pa. (October 10, 2026) - Alvernia field hockey (6-5, 2-1 MAC) picked up a thrilling win against the Hood College Blazers (5-6) on Saturday night to close out Homecoming and Family Weekend.

After two overtime periods, Alvernia survived a penalty shootout, where the Golden Wolves took a 3-2 advantage. Sofia Mollura converted the game-winning attempt.

How It Happened

  • Alvernia came out of the gates hot and struck early, just after five minutes of play, when they were awarded a corner opportunity. After Sofia Mollura inserted the ball, Ava Michael connected with Caroline Martin to break the scoring and take a 1-0 lead over the Blazers.

  • The Golden Wolves would go on to have just one more corner opportunity at the end of the quarter that did not result in anything for the Golden Wolves.

  • Quarters two and three went back and forth, with both teams exchanging offensive spurts, but it remained deadlocked at 1-0 in favor of the Golden Wolves.

  • The fourth quarter was all Blazers, who generated four corner opportunities and five shots in the quarter. Their final corner of the quarter resulted in the game-tying goal, which ultimately sent the game into overtime.

  • The first overtime period heavily favored the Blazers, who pushed the pace offensively, but ultimately, the game remained stalemated at 1-1.

  • In the second overtime, the Golden Wolves had every chance in the world to put it away but could not connect with the back of the net. After an early green card on the Blazers, the Golden Wolves were granted three consecutive corner opportunities that were turned aside by Hood. Thanks to strong defensive stands in the second overtime, the Blazers forced the game to a shootout.

  • Hood had the opportunity to kick things off. Jazmin Mayfield came way off her line to attack the angle of the Hood attacker and forced a miss, putting the ball in the hands of one of the Golden Wolves' leading scorers, Sarah Schaffer.

  • Schaffer capitalized and gave the Golden Wolves a 1-0 advantage. The Blazers evened things up, and the Golden Wolves turned to their go-to goal scorer. Ava Michael came face-to-face with the Blazers' goalkeeper and bested her to put the Golden Wolves up 2-1.

  • After Hood evened things up again, the fate of the game fell on the stick of Sofia Mollura. Mollura rounded the goalie and delivered the game-winning attempt.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Golden Wolves dominated the corner game 11-6, which resulted in a shot advantage of 11-8 in favor of the Golden Wolves.
