Golden Wolves Outlast Widener with 1-0 Win

CHESTER, PA. (October 14) - On Wednesday evening, the Alvernia University women's soccer team (5-4-3) defeated Widener University (6-6-1) in a 1-0 defensive battle. The Pride outshot the Golden Wolves 15-8, but it only took one goal from Sarah Ashley to make the difference in this conference bout. Alvernia ended a 10-year drought, defeating Widener for the first time since 2016.

How It Happened

  • In the first half, Alvernia got on the attack early and saw Faith Greenday fire a shot toward goal, but it was saved by the Pride within the first six minutes of action. Widener would flip the field and tally three shots within a three-minute span, but great defense by the Golden Wolves kept the game scoreless. In the 14th and 18th minutes, Sarah Ashley managed to put two shots on target, but both were saved. Over the remainder of the half, both the Pride and the Golden Wolves put two shots on goal each, but strong overall defense kept the game all knotted up entering the intermission.
  • In the second half, despite the Pride registering multiple shots against the Golden Wolves, a great sequence off a throw-in and through ball from Mia Ralston, a great run paid off when the ball found the feet of Ashley and puts it past the goalie to give Alvernia a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Despite conceding the goal, the Pride continued to press the action and picked up the intensity, tallying five shots and three corners over the next 20 minutes. However, even though the Golden Wolves could not put together a consistent offense following the goal, their defense and great play from goalkeeper Abby Rowley kept the game at 1-0. The Pride tested the Golden Wolves' defense with six shots, but Alvernia held on and picked up back-to-back wins in conference play.
