Golden Wolves Surrender Loss to No.18 Spartans, 2-0

Reading, Pa. (October 21, 2026) — Alvernia field hockey (6-8, 2-3 MAC) dropped a close conference match to No. 18 York (11-4, 5-1 MAC) by a score of 2-0 on Wednesday night under the lights in Reading.

The Golden Wolves held the Spartans under their 3.57 goals-per-game average and became the sixth team to hold York to just two goals so far this season, mainly off the back of Jazmin Mayfield's eight saves between the pipes for Alvernia.

How it Happened:

  • York tested the Golden Wolves early in the opening stanza. Immediately, Jazmin Mayfield was forced to make saves as the Spartans fired five shots in the opening three minutes of play. The Golden Wolves survived a flurry of six corners generated by the Spartans in that time.
  • The game stalled out in the midfield until, with three minutes remaining, Jazmin Mayfield had to make her fourth save of the quarter to keep things knotted up at 0-0.
  • After the break, Alvernia's Ava Michael forced the issue and missed the net by mere inches while looking to break the ice. In response to the Golden Wolves' best offensive look of the half, York pushed four shots toward the goal by the midpoint of the quarter. Jazmin Mayfield made two saves to push her total to six on the night as things stayed stalemated going into the half.
  • Coming out of the half, the Golden Wolves pushed the pace again, and Ava Michael had another shot that did not find the net, but the offense wasn't sustained. Minutes later, the Spartans generated corner opportunities that continued to be turned away by the Golden Wolves.
  • Eventually, the Spartans' offense wore the Golden Wolves down and finally connected with the back of the net with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter off a corner opportunity.
  • Four minutes into the fourth quarter, York capitalized on a barrage of shots and extended its lead, which led to the 2-0 final.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Jazmin Mayfield made eight saves in the contest.
  • The Golden Wolves held the Spartans just under their goals-per-game average of 3.51. Alvernia also became the sixth team out of 15 to hold York to two goals or fewer this season.
