READING, PA. (October 21) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Alvernia University women's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Neumann University. The Golden Wolves kept the second set competitive but struggled to contain the Knights' offensive attack in the first and third sets, putting Alvernia in an uphill battle it could not overcome.
How It Happened
- In the first set, the Golden Wolves found themselves trailing early and could not overcome the Knights' offensive onslaught. Alvernia fell behind 10-3 early, with points from Allison Wolf and Casey Treude. Despite a 5-4 stretch in which the Golden Wolves capitalized on Knight errors, Neumann maintained a 15-7 lead. Over the next 11 points, the Knights scored seven to extend their advantage to 22-11. Wolf and a Neumann service error accounted for Alvernia's final points of the set, as the Knights closed out a 25-13 win.
- The second set proved to be the most competitive of the match, with both teams exchanging blows. Alvernia opened the set with a 6-4 run, fueled by contributions from Wolf and Olivia Jones. Despite Alvernia's improved offensive performance, the Knights responded with an 11-8 run to maintain a narrow 15-14 lead. Wolf and Jones continued to find success at the net, helping the Golden Wolves put together a 5-4 run to tie the set at 19-19. However, a four-point swing from Neumann gave the Knights a 23-19 advantage late in the set. Alvernia responded with a 5-1 run of its own to even the score at 24-24. Despite a late kill from Treude, the Knights scored three of the final four points to take the set, 27-25.
- Following the heartbreaking second-set loss, the Golden Wolves looked to battle back and keep the match alive. However, Neumann had other plans, scoring 10 of the first 13 points to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Olivia Rohrbaugh and Wolf contributed during a 5-2 run to cut the Knights' advantage to 12-8. Another big run from Neumann extended its lead to 19-9, giving the Knights some breathing room. Rohrbaugh and Zoe Velez attempted to spark a comeback with a 5-3 run, but the deficit proved too much to overcome as Neumann secured the set, 25-15.
