Alvernia Defeats Neumann 5-1 on Senor Night

READING, PA. (October. 24) - On Saturday evening, the Alvernia University field hockey team defeated Neumann University 5-1 as they celebrated senior night. The Golden Wolves were led by Ava Michael who scored two goals and assisted on one to pick up her 100th career point.

How It Happened:

  • The Golden Wolves looked strong out the gate, as Alessandra Stevens found Ava Michael at the 1:44 mark to put Alvernia up 1-0. Following a series of possessions, Caroline Martin picked up her eighth goal of the season assisted by Michael giving Alvernia the 2-0 lead with seven minutes to go in the first period. Jazmin Mayfield would make three big saves late to keep Alvernia's 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

  • The Knights picked up some shots early but the Golden Wolves defense was strong not allowing a goal through the opening five minutes. Alvernia however did not waste their offensive possession as Michael did it once more finding the back of the cage increasing the lead to 3-0. Neumann would record two late penalty corners and put one shot on frame, but another Mayfield save kept Alvernia 3-0 lead at the half.

  • The opening eight minutes were slow despite registering four shots and two penalty corners. But it didn't take long beyond that as a penalty stroke allowed Sarah Schaffer to add her name to the scorebook increasing the lead to 4-0. The Knights did strike back late with a goal of their own in the 41st minute.

  • In the final period, Alvernia once again struck early with Carley Mackert connecting with Martin increasing the lead back to four. Neumann would manage to gather three penalty corners late, but stifling defense was enough to shutout the Knights and pick up the big 5-1 conference win.
