READING, Pa. (October 31) – On Halloween night, the Alvernia University women's soccer team defeated King's College 3-0 on Senior Night. The Golden Wolves closed out the regular season with a dominant performance against the Monarchs. While celebrating seniors Megan Reuter, Hannah Woodward, and Maria Mazzoni, Alvernia also enjoyed first-season goals from Taylor Flaherty and Kayleigh McKeown, as well as the first career goal for senior Hannah Woodward.
How It Happened:
- The Golden Wolves controlled the first half, allowing the Monarchs just one shot on goal. Alvernia generated several scoring opportunities, with Faith Greenday, Flaherty, Mia Ralston, and Devon Bell each putting a shot on goal. In the 34th minute, Woodward found a streaking McKeown, who got a foot on the ball and slipped it past the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season, giving Alvernia a 1-0 advantage.
- Coming out of halftime with the lead, the Golden Wolves kept their foot on the gas and created another scoring opportunity just 56 seconds into the second half. Flaherty played a beautiful cross that made its way past the Monarchs' back line and found Sarah Ashley, who tapped it in to give Alvernia a 2-0 lead. After continuing to dominate possession and generate scoring chances, the Golden Wolves struck again exactly 30 minutes later. Ashley sent a cross into the box, and Flaherty got her head on it to score her first goal of the season and extend the lead to 3-0 with just 15 minutes remaining. Alvernia's defense surrendered three late shots, but strong saves from Abby Rowley and a team block preserved the shutout victory.
