Chester, Pa. (Feb. 14, 2026) - Widener University (18-5, 9-3) jumped out to a 21-9 lead through the first quarter and never looked back, downing Alvernia University (12-11, 7-5), 70-46, on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Widener.
Alvernia trailed just 4-3 through the opening minutes of the game, but Widener quickly ran away with the lead following a 17-4 outburst. The Pride took a 35-16 lead into the half, and Alvernia never threatened in the second half. With the win, Widener evened the season series against Alvernia. The Golden Wolves took the first meeting, 69-59, in the MAC Commonwealth opener back in early January.
How it Happened
- Alvernia trailed just 4-3 through three minutes of play with Alvernia's first 3-points coming off a Samantha Wade 3-pointer. But, the Pride quickly jumped out to a 21-7 lead following a 17-4 run by Widener over the next five and a half minutes. Alvernia closed out the quarter with a putback layup by Jennah DeGout as the game moved into the second quarter.
- The Golden Wolves and Pride exchanged layups to open the second quarter, but Widener kept its foot on the gas, pushing it to a 19 point lead, 33-14, with 90 seconds to play in the half. Alvernia closed out the half with a layup from DeGout as Widener took a 35-16 lead into the break.
- The Golden Wolves opened the second half with a Taryn Woodson layup, but Alvernia was then held without a field goal for over four minutes as the Pride took a 42-20 lead. A putback layup from Meghan Ruth got Alvernia going again, but the Golden Wolves could not gain any ground on the Pride. Widener took a 54-31 lead into the final ten minutes.
- The Pride continued to roll in the fourth quarter, building their lead up to as much as 30, 66-36, at the midpoint of the quarter. The Golden Wolves outscored the Pride 10-4 in the final minutes of the game, but Widener came away with the 70-46 win.
Inside the Box Score
- Meghan Ruth finished with a team-high nine points and also pulled down eight rebounds.
- Jennah DeGout finished with a team-high 11 rebounds and scored six points.
- The Pride forced 28 Alvernia turnovers on the afternoon, and Widener capitalized by scoring 33 points off of Alvernia's turnovers. Overall, Alvernia's defense held Widener to just 26-for-75 shooting, and Widener was just 3-for-24 from deep.
