#3 Alvernia Falls to #2 Widener, 61-54, in MAC Commonwealth Semifinal

Chester, Pa. (Feb. 25, 2026) - #2 Widener University put up 21 points in the fourth quarter to defeat #3 Alvernia University 61-54 on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth semifinal action.

The Golden Wolves led late and built their lead up to as much as eight early in the fourth quarter. But, after Alvernia pushed its lead to eight, Widener answered with a 19-1 run to not only eliminate Alvernia's lead, but build its lead up to ten with a minute to play. Alvernia could not close the late gap as Widener secured the win.

Widener took an eight point lead, 16-8, through the first quarter. But, Alvernia quickly erased the deficit and used a 17 point second quarter to take a  25-23 lead late in the second quarter. Widener then grabbed the final points of the quarter to take a narrow 27-25 lead into the half.

The Golden Wolves came out of the break and evened the game on a Ryleigh Poole layup and then took a 29-27 lead on a putback layup by Meghan Ruth. After several exchanges of the lead, Alvernia took a three point advantage following a layup by Samantha Wade and a putback layup by Jennah DeGout. The Golden Wolves pushed their lead to six, 46-40, on a layup by DeGout to close out the quarter.

A Ruth layup put Alvernia in front by eight, 48-40, to open the quarter. But, the Pride erupted on a 19-1 run to erase Alvernia's lead and take a 10 point lead of their own, 59-49, with 43 seconds to play. The Pride shot 8-for-18 during the nine minute run and held Alvernia to 0-for-11 shooting. The Golden Wolves got back on the board with a pair of made free throws by Kyla Reed. Widener answered with two made free throws of its own to maintain the ten point advantage, 61-51. Grace Dobrzynski hit a late 3-pointer for Alvernia, but it was too little too late as Widener took the 61-54 win.

Alvernia was led by a ten point, ten rebound double-double by Meghan Ruth. Kyla Reed also hit double-digits with ten points, and Jennah DeGout finished with a team-high 12 rebounds.

Alvernia will await a potential ECAC bid. Widener advances to take on Messiah in the 2026 MAC Commonwealth Championship game.
