Alvernia Sweeps Widener

Berwick Records 100th Career Strikeout

Chester, Pa. (March 21, 2026) - Alvernia University (8-8, 3-1) posted two victories over Widener University (3-9, 0-4) Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader at Widener.

The Golden Wolves took down the Pride in game one, 3-0, on the back of a complete game shutout by Natalie Berwick. Berwick tossed 7 innings, scattered just four hits and did not allow a run. Berwick also fanned five batters and in doing so, eclipsed the 100 career strikeout mark.

Alvernia then took down the Pride in game two, 7-1, and rattled off an impressive 16 hits, the most this season. Lauren Jascewsky and Meryn Bellacima both drove in two runs for the Golden Wolves and Ava Rudolph, Angelina Sponheimer and Savannah Richards all tallied RBIs for Alvernia.

Game 1: Alvernia: 3, Widener 0

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves took the lead in the top of the second inning after Meryn Bellacima ripped a solo homer over the left field wall and put Alvernia on the board with a 1-0 lead.
  • Alvernia added to its lead in the next inning thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Lauren Jascewsky plated Kalli Bunnell and pushed the Alvernia lead to 2-0.
  • Both the Golden Wolves and the Pride would go scoreless over the next two innings before Alvernia tacked on one more run for good measure in the top of the sixth after Savannah Richards and Abigale Millhouse executed a first and third steal play that allowed Millhouse to steal home and put the Golden Wolves up 3-0.
  • The Pride tallied a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning but that was all Natalie Berwick would allow as she got the final three Widener batters to fly out, strikeout and groundout to secure the complete game shutout and the 3-0 victory for the Golden Wolves.
