Alvernia Splits on Final Day in Florida

Clermont, Florida (March 6, 2026) - Alvernia Softball split its final day of action on Friday at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida to close out its ten-game stint at The Spring Games.

Alvernia started the day with an 8-0 win over Simmons in five innings. But, Alvernia closed out its trip with an 8-0 loss to Simmons in five innings game two. With the split, Alvernia closes out its spring break trip at 5-5.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia got on the board in the bottom of the second. Taylor McClain got on with one on a single through the left side. Sydney Teufel and Lauren Jascewsky joined her on base with back to back walks. Kalli Bunnell then hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in McClain, and Alexia Fitzgerald cleared the bases with a single up the middle to make it a 3-0 contest. After a pitching change by Simmons, Alvernia reloaded the bases with back-to-back walks with two outs on the board.
  • The Golden Wolves continued to roll in the second inning. Meryn Bellacima drove in a pair of runs on a single up the middle to give Alvernia the 5-0 lead. Alvernia batted around and Angelina Sponheimer returned to the plate and hit a single through the left side to score Summer Montgomery for the 6-0 advantage.
  • The Golden Wolves capped off the second inning with a heads up play by Bellacima and Sponheimer with the passes loaded. Bellacima took home on a wild pitch and Sponheimer came all the way home on a bad toss by the catcher on the same play to give Alvernia the 8-0 lead.
  • Alvernia rode the second inning the rest of the way. Natalie Berwick scattered just two hits the rest of the way. Simmons' closest threat to breaking up the shutout came in the third inning. Following a walk and a sacrifice bunt, the Sharks had a runner on second with two outs. The Sharks hit a single to center field. The runner on second rounded for home and Alexia Fitzgerald threw her out at the plate with Montgomery applying the tag.

How it Happened
  • Illinois wasted no time and jumped out to a big lead in the bottom of the first. The Lady Blues plated seven runs on four hits, which included a home run to deep center that scored three runs. Illinois also reached on two walks and an error en route to taking the early 7-0 lead.
  • Alvernia threatened to get on the board in the top of the second with Taylor McClain reaching on a lead off double. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there as Illinois retired the next three batters. Alvernia again had a runner in scoring position in the third with Savannah Richards reaching on a double down the line and stealing second. But, Richards was stranded as well.
  • Illinois tacked on a run in the bottom of the third on an inside the park home run that rolled to the right field corner to take an 8-0 lead.
  • Alvernia held Illinois hitless in the fourth, but Alvernia could not answer as the Lady Blues took the game in five innings, 8-0.
