Golden Wolves Sweep Diplomats in Sunday Double

Reading, Pa. (April 12, 2026) - Alvernia University's (12-16) bats came alive on Sunday as the Golden Wolves picked up two wins over Franklin and Marshall (12-16) in non-conference softball action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves shutout F&M in game one, 7-0, and took game two, 4-2, to complete the sweep. Alvernia combined for 27 hits across both games. Junior Taylor McClain recorded a total of three hits on the day to eclipse 100 on her career.

Game One: Alvernia 7, Franklin and Marshall 0

The Golden Wolves got on the board in the bottom of the second. Savannah Richards led off the inning with a bunt for a base hit and moved over to second a sacrifice bunt by Nina Viola. Richards came around to score on a Kalli Bunnell single to center field. Bunnell then came home herself on an infield single by Alexia Fitzgerald to give Alvernia the early 2-0 lead.

Alvernia broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, posting five runs on six hits. Viola led off the inning with a single up the middle and was pinch run for by Abigale Millhouse. Millhouse stole second and advanced to third on a Sydney Teufel single to left. Millhouse then stole home to give Alvernia the 3-0 lead. A Bunnell single scored Teufel, and Fitzgerald reached on a single to center to put two on with no outs.

After a Franklin and Marshall pitching change, Alvernia kept it rolling in the fourth. Lauren Jascewsky ripped a triple down the left field line to score Bunnell and Fitzgerald, and Jascewsky came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Angelina Sponheimer to cap off the inning and give Alvernia the 7-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves shut the Diplomats down from there. Alvernia did not allow a base runner to get past second the rest of the way as Natalie Berwick completed her complete game performance in the circle to earn the shutout 7-0 win.

Lauren Jascewsky and Alexia Fitzgerald led Alvernia at the plate with three hits each. Jascewsky went 3-for-4 with a triple, run, and two RBIs. Fitzgerald went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Kalli Bunnell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Natalie Berwick went the distance in the circle, scattering six hits and striking out five.

Game Two: Alvernia 4, Franklin and Marshall 2

Alvernia once again struck first in game two with a run in the bottom of the first. Alexia Fitzgerald led off the game with a triple to the right gap. Taylor McClain then drove in Fitzgerald with a single through the left side to notch her 100th career hit and give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.

Franklin and Marshall answered in the top of the second, scoring two runs on a fielding error by Alvernia to take a 2-1 lead. The Diplomat lead did not last long as Alvernia evened the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. Kalli Bunnell was hit by a pitch to get on base and advanced to second on a Fitzgerald walk. McClain then singled up the middle to drive in Bunnell and even the game up at 2-2.

Alvernia broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third. Alexa Ullrich singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a fielding error on a fielder's choice during the at-bat of Savannah Richards. A perfectly executed bunt by Summer Montgomery advanced both Ullrich and Richards, and Ullrich came in to score on a groundout to first base by Teufel. Bunnell then followed and drove in Richards on a single to left field to give Alvernia the 4-2 lead.

Alvernia's defense locked down the Diplomats from there. Alvernia allowed just one hit per inning the rest of the way and never allowed a runner to get past second base.

Alexia Fitzgerald led Alvernia in game two with a 3-for-3 performance that included a triple. She also scored a run. Taylor McClain went 2-for-4 with her 100th hit and two RBIs. Alexa Ullrich went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday at DeSales.
