Alvernia Drops Two to Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown, Pa. (April 21, 2026) - Alvernia University (16-20) dropped a pair of non-conference games to Elizabethtown College (19-15) on Tuesday evening in softball action at Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays took game one, 5-0, before taking game two, 8-3.

Elizabethtown allowed just three hits in its shutout win over Alvernia. The Blue Jays plated two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Alvernia had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third after Lizzy Williams hit a leadoff single to the left gap and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ava Rudolph. But, the Blue Jays got out of the inning to maintain the 2-0 lead.

Elizabethtown added two more runs in the fourth and took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Alvernia had runners on first and third in the bottom of the seventh following a Mikayla Eckman and Williams single. But, the Blue Jays stranded Alvernia's runners there to take the 5-0 shutout win.

Lizzy Williams led Alvernia, going 3-for-3 and accounting for Alvernia's three hits. Natalie Berwick went five innings in the circle, striking out three. Ryann Healey made a one-inning relief appearance and did not allow a hit or walk.

In game two of the doubleheader, Alvernia took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Alexia Fitzgerald led off the game by reaching on a fielding error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Jascewsky. Alvernia's 1-0 lead did not last long as Elizabethtown evened the game at 1-1 on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first.

The Blue Jays then blew the game open with a six spot in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs on five hits to take the 7-1 lead. Alvernia got two runs back in the fourth. Nina Viola led off the inning with a walk, and was pinch run for by Abigale Millhouse. Millhouse was joined on base by Kalli Bunnell after she reached on a single. Millhouse then came home on a groundout by Fitzgerald and Bunnell followed home on a ground out by Richards to make it a 7-3 lead.

Alvernia stranded two in the fifth before Elizabethtown tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Alvernia had runners on second and third in the seventh with two outs, but Elizabethtown got the final out to secure the 8-3 win.

Angelina Sponheimer and Lizzy Williams both went 2-for-4 for Alvernia in game two. Alexia Fitzgerald went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Savannah Richards went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Madison Velez got the start in the circle and struck out two. Kelsey Racine went four and two thirds, striking out two and allowing five hits.
