Second Half Surge Lifts Golden Wolves Past Chargers, 3-0

Reading, Pa. (September 6, 2026) - Alvernia University's (2-1) offense exploded for three goals in the second half to best Lancaster Bible College (0-3), 3-0, Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Alvernia.

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Wolves took advantage of a red-hot start to the second half and ran away with it with goals courtesy of Chase Malone, Josh Ertel, and Grayson Kelley. Alvernia goalkeeper Michael Griffith III recorded three saves within 30 seconds of each other late in the second half to preserve Alvernia's first shutout of the season.

How it Happened
  • The Chargers came out with strong offensive pressure to begin the game and connected through the midfield to generate clean offensive looks that resulted in five first half shots.
  • Alvernia's best chance in the half came just 10 minutes into the half when Jackson Taliani sent a free kick towards the back post where Bobby Lockard sent a shot towards the cage that was pushed aside by the Chargers keeper.
  • The remainder of the half went back and forth in the midfield and resulted in a stalemate at zero a piece.
  • It didn't take long for the Golden Wolves to strike in the second half when Joseph Washington took a touch past his back line defender and sent a cross into the box that found the foot of Chase Malone who hammered it home to break the ice for Alvernia.
  • The offense continued to surge and finally broke through again in the 75th minute courtesy of Josh Ertel. Parker Lukens led a long throw-in into the box that trickled through the Charger defense and landed in front of Ertel to tap home as the lead extended to 2-0.
  • Alvernia keeper Michael Griffith III tallied all four of his saves in the second half and including a flurry of saves within 30 seconds of each other to keep the Chargers out of the back of the net and preserved the shutout.
  • After a wave of substitutes, the Golden Wolves put the game away with two Golden Wolves who recorded their first career points in the maroon and gold kits. Owen Bice connected on a pass to Grayson Kelly in the 85th minute to give Alvernia a three goal lead and secure the victory.
