Year in Review - Events
2009-2010
Brian Longo, (baseball) lead both our SAAC and the MAC SAAC this year as President.
He closed the year during a MAC President and AD meeting by presenting the Giant Steps award and reviewing MAC SAAC’s accomplishments for the year. Alvernia University SAAC and Emerging Leaders took part in the following activities:
Hazing
Both groups took part in a 30-minute presentation on hazing at the collegiate level. The presentation reviewed what constitutes as hazing and the consequences for participating in such an act. Discussion and review followed the presentation.
Adopt-A-Team
The format of this event was changed to encourage more participation. Student-athletes were grouped together by different sports and promoted a game during their off season. The contest could be from any other sport. All team participants were encouraged to attend.
Canned Food Drive
During the holidays, the student-athletes participated in a canned food drive. The event was based on competition from each team. The team that brought in the most cans received a pizza party from the department. The cans were donated to a local Reading food drive.
Drug Testing
Alvernia University Athletics and Recreation Department created a drug testing program to begin during the following year. The SAAC and Emerging Leaders were a part of the design of the program and gave feedback on all aspects of the program.
The Perfect Leader
Both groups participated in this on-going leadership program. All student-athletes were split into five groups. Each group had to research and design a presentation that expressed who the ideal ‘Perfect Leader’ is and why. After each group presented, a debate on what characteristics and behaviors make a leader and why one is perfect and the other is not. In the end, the groups took the qualities that they believed were most important and put them together to make a perfect leader.
NCAA Legislation
Each year the Athletic Director reaches out to all members to discuss the upcoming NCAA legislation that must be voted on at the annual convention. Feedback and voting took place.
