Year In Review – Events
2010-2011
This year’s SAAC members engaged in various activities that hit a realm of different areas. To start the year, the group focused on what programs to participate in and how to reach out to the Alvernia Community and the surrounding community as well.
Night As a Crusader
Local boys and girls were invited to share in an evening with the men’s soccer team as we hosted Messiah in a conference match-up. The children were given an Alvernia University t-shirt and then escorted onto the turf field for a night game under the lights. During warm-ups, the boys and girls chased balls, picked up cones, and had a chance to communicate with the athletes. When announcements were made, they made a tunnel for both teams to run through and then lined up at the 50 for the National Anthem. The night was capped off with hotdogs, snacks, and drinks.
NCAA Leadership Conference
Seth Cornell (basketball) and Michelle Hermanns (softball) participated in the NCAA Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida. Both spent three days meeting many other student-athletes from all over the country and of different NCAA divisional play. A short time after the conference, both Seth and Michelle educated our students that are a part of our Progressive Leadership Model and encouraged them to take the activities back to their specific teams.
SMYMCA Retreat
Freshmen and SAAC members spent a four- hour time period on a November Sunday at South Mountain YMCA. There were 45 participants who split into four groups and worked on specific training such as: team conflict, team resolutions, communicating (with and without your voice), diversity, etc.
NCAA Legislation
SAAC meets specifically once a year to discuss NCAA Legislation and take a vote on certain issues. The Athletic Director runs the meeting to get feedback and hear what student athletes specifically have concerns with. The votes are tallied and the AD uses this information when voting at the annual NCAA convention.
Football
All student-athlete Emerging Leaders were ask to meet to discuss the ongoing football feasibility study. Alvernia University was trying to determine if football would be beneficial from all aspects of having to start the program.
Christmas on Campus
SAAC members participated in the annual event representing the Athletics and Recreation Department.
Alcohol Awareness
All members of our Progressive Leadership Model attended an Alcohol Awareness program early in the year. All the student athletes spent an hour being educated on choices, consequences, and effects of using alcohol.
