Payne started at quarterback for all ten games for the Golden Wolves during his sophomore year and was named a team captain. Payne completed 171 passes for 2,177 yards, which sets a new Alvernia single season record. Payne threw for 12 touchdowns and tallied two rushing touchdowns for a total of 14 touchdowns on the season. Payne threw for three touchdowns in a victory over crosstown rival Albright and threw for two touchdowns against Lebanon Valley and Eastern. Payne’s season high in passing yards came against Lebanon Valley when he threw for 374 yards and two touchdowns, he then followed that up with another 300 yard performance the next week against Albright where he threw for 341, three touchdowns and also recorded a rushing touchdown. Payne also tallied a rushing touchdown against Delaware Valley. Payne’s 2,177 passing yards ranked him second in the MAC, his 217.7 yards per game led the MAC and his 12 passing touchdowns ranked him in a tie for third most in the conference.

Payne appeared in three games at quarterback for the Golden Wolves in his first year and made starts in all three. Payne tallied 59 completions on 103 attempts for 778 passing yards, which ranked first for Alvernia. Payne finished with eight touchdown passes, four interceptions, a passer rating of 138.6 and averaged 259.3 yards per game. Payne broke Alvernia’s single game passing record in his first collegiate start when he threw for 380 yards and two touchdowns against Ursinus.
